Previous Public Service: two terms on Monroeville Board of Education

Why did you decide to run: I have no agendas except what is best for all kids. I waited until all my children were grown to run for this important board. Monroeville is my home and I care what takes place here. This is where I graduated and met my husband and all my children graduated from Monroeville and are all employed, in which I am grateful. We have a great town and an outstanding school system.

I guess the school is in my heart and I just want to help make it the best that it can be.

What do you see as the top three concerns facing your constituents:

1) Space - hopefully the future will be good to our students, trying to come up with a solution we all can afford

2) Money - is always a problem, hopefully the state will get their act together and help schools without the hassle of the big city schools getting the money and the smaller schools having to depend always on the voters.

Why did you decide to run: I believe our school is the central point of our community. As a board member I would like to improve communication and involvement between the school and the community. With knowledge of what is happening in the school, community members can volunteer their knowledge, skills and ability helping to improve our students academically. Examples would be FFA, the gifted programs, PTA, reading to our young children and helping with music/drama department.

What do you see as the top three concerns facing your constituents:

1) To be academically strong - to be able to offer advanced classes

2) Keeping the school financially solvent

3) Improving the school facilities enabling the school to provide better education, for example science labs

Why did you decide to run: Under the current school board and superintendent, expenditures have exceeded revenue since the 2004-2005 school year. In July of 2004 there was a surplus in excess of $3 million. That surplus is at less than $2 million as of July 2007. At this rate we will be operating at a deficit in approximately three years. Our current board members appear to not question any requests made by the superintendent. Many residents of the Monroeville Community have urged me to run for the school board so that someone will be questioning expenditures.

What do you see as the top three concerns facing your constituents: Monroeville Schools are considered an at risk district by the ODE report card because we have not made adequate yearly progress. Education and encouragement of all students. Balance the budget and increase the surplus. We need more space at the schools. Voters would be more likely to approve a building bond issue if the money is there for the increase in operating expenses that will naturally occur with a larger facility.
