WILLARD — Willard High School is participating in the OHSAA statewide Military Appreciation Night on Jan. 17.

The recognition will take place across the state at all basketball games, including the Willard Flashes vs Port Clinton boys basketball at Robert L. Haas Gymnasium.

Veterans and active military will be admitted to the game for free on this evening. A display of various military branch uniforms will be highlighted in the commons, as well as a display of student-created, military-themed artwork. Three televisions will highlight a scrolling presentation of photographs representing the rich military inspired events hosted by Willard Flashes students over the past three years, including military appreciation football games, veterans day programs, Honor Flights and the Honor Run 5K run/walk.

A special presentation of Hometown Hero banners will take place prior to the varsity game. There will be a color guard presentation of the nation’s colors and the Willard Flashes Chamber Choir will sing the National Anthem. The Flashes pep band will entertain with patriotic songs throughout the night as well.

All community members, especially local veterans from Willard and Port Clinton, are invited to attend to be part of this special night to honor veterans.

Anyone with questions can contact Jason Ratliff at Willard High Schoo. This project is being managed by Willard High School students in Teen Leadership Corp, FFA, student council and their advisors. These groups are heavily involved in honoring veterans in the local community and feel passionate to honor those who served our country.

WHS has recently been honored with a Purple Star designation from The Ohio Department of Education for its work supporting military families and honoring local veterans.
