Florida man arrested in Oxford Township

OXFORD TOWNSHIP — A Florida man was arrested Saturday night following an accident on the Ohio Turnpike.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Milan Post received a call of a hit-skip crash that occurred on the Ohio Turnpike at mile post 79 eastbound at about 9:18 p.m. Saturday.

Troopers from the Milan Post attempted to initiate a traffic stop with the suspect’s vehicle at mile post 96 and a pursuit ensued. The suspect’s vehicle later struck the rear of a commercial vehicle trailer and went off the right side of the roadway at mile post 115 in Oxford Township (The Sandusky-Norwalk exit is mile post 118). The suspect’s vehicle went through the fence and became disabled in a field about 200 feet off the roadway. The suspect fled on foot and after a short foot chase, was apprehended without further incident.

The suspect was identified as Jacoby B. Smart from Lauderhill Fla. Smart was transported from the scene by North Central EMS with non-incapacitating injuries to Fisher-Titus Medical Center.

Smart will be held at the Erie County Jail pending arraignment at the Erie County Municipal Court today. Smart faces charges of OVI, hit/skip and felony fleeing and eluding.
