Since recently joining the Norwalk Economic Development Corporation's Main Street Program, I've had the opportunity to meet many individuals and groups. These people and the Uptown businesses and property owners have been nothing but impressive as I continue to get acquainted.

The energy behind Main Street Norwalk lies in its volunteer committee approach to strengthening Norwalk's central business district. These four committees design, promotion, organization and economic development have been re-energized for 2007. The design committee will be installing new address signs, the promotion committee has set up an advertising seminar for small businesses, the organization committee is working on volunteer development, and the economic development committee is preparing a consumer survey. This is a current snapshot of committee activity more projects are on tap for the rest of the year.

Main Street Norwalk depends on volunteers to get the projects planned and done right. We need your input and assistance, especially if you have a vested interest in the Uptown area. In fact, all of us have a vested interest in Main Street Norwalk because it is a reflection of the overall community. The easiest way to get involved is to shop on Main Street, eat on Main Street, and participate in activities on Main Street. Call (419) 660-8696 if you'd like to volunteer, and stay tuned for more information about how you can be a part of the program.

Thanks to our volunteers on the promotion committee, we are pleased to present Media Buying for Small Businesses from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Berry's Restaurant. This is a free forum on how to advertise your business, and representatives from newspaper, radio, outdoor (billboards), cable television, and direct mail will be on hand. Don't let a lack of time or information limit your prospects. Small businesses from all around the community are welcome to join us for a casual, relaxed, no-pressure evening of information designed to help maximize the potential of your business.

Going forward with the Main Street Program you can expect to see solid partnerships with the city, civic groups, and of course the business community. One such partnership is the Uptown Planting on Memorial Day Weekend. Families who have lost loved ones throughout the past year are invited to visit Uptown May 26 to help plant flowers and grasses in the Main Street area. Plaques honoring the deceased citizens will be provided for each corner plot. A community prayer service will begin at 9 a.m. at Bresson Park followed by the planting effort. Suggested donations are $15 to help cover plaque and plant costs, and the local Master Gardener organization will be on hand to provide planting expertise.

Throughout the summer, these blooming corners will beautify Main Street and serve to honor the memory of the community members and their families. Businesses interested in sponsoring a corner will also be listed on a plaque. Please contact Main Street Norwalk at (419) 660-8696 for sponsorship information.
