Fatal crashes half of what they were last year

Through the second quarter of this year, Huron County has experienced one fatal crash resulting in one death. This single-vehicle accident occurred on Fitchville River Road in Hartland Township and took the life of Sheffield Lake resident Joey Petty, 39.

This was the second fatal crash in Huron County so far this year. Statistically, this is better than last year at this time, when four fatal crashes had already occurred in the county.

Among other things, the Huron County Safe Communities Coalition keeps track of each fatal accident. The group of community leaders then takes that data and assesses the driving habits and contributing aspects, including road factors, as a way to recognize how to make the community a better and safer place to live, work and play.

The Hartland Township fatality happened about 3:38 p.m. May 2. It was on Fitchville River Road, south of Court Road.

Petty was driving a 2002 Ford Ranger northbound on Fitchville River Road when he failed to negotiate a slight, left curve, according to the state Highway patrol. The Ranger went off the right side and hit a mailbox. Troopers said the driver then went back across Fitchville River Road, traveling off the left side, where it struck a ditch and overturned into several trees.

Petty was wearing his safety belt at the time. Troopers also said alcohol or drug use didn’t appear to be factors.
