Armando Gonzalez Toral, 23, of Fremont, was charged with failure to control, operating a vehicle under the influence, driving under suspension and a hit-skip violation. The charges are in connection with the accident in the 2100 block of North Ohio 61 just after 10 p.m.
“It appears to be a one-vehicle (crash),” said Lt. Charles Gullett, of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which handled the crash investigation.
Two Huron County sheriff’s deputies, the Norwalk Fire Department and North Central EMS also responded to the scene.
Firefighters arrived at 10:06 p.m. and were at the crash site for 90 minutes. According to their report, the 12-man crew discovered “a car had rolled several times and was on its roof.”
“Witnesses stated two occupants got out of the vehicle” and ran from the scene, said firefighters, who assisted other first-responders in searching for the subjects using lights and a thermal imager.
Deputies were notified that “at least two people ran away from the scene on foot,” Lt. Bill Duncan said. While troopers handled the crash scene, deputies searched for the two fleeing suspects.
Duncan said deputies located two men by the bank near the road on Ohio 61 near Johnson Road. The location was about 1 1/2 miles from the crash site. The men’s names weren’t being released because deputies hadn’t charged them as of press time.
Upon being detained, the men reported being injured, Duncan said, so the deputies handed them over to North Central EMS and the patrol.
“Both of the men had run from the wrecked vehicle,” the lieutenant added.
The patrol’s investigation report wasn’t complete at press time.
