SANDUSKY — Security video from a Sandusky convenience store Wednesday appears to show a man lunge over the counter with a knife and struggle with a cashier over a register’s cash drawer.

The incident occurred at Variety Village on East Market Street at about 6:15 p.m., according to a Sandusky police report.

The suspect, who wore a grey hoodie, went to the register and asked to buy a cigar but he told the cashier he did not have enough money, the report states. Surveillance video provided by Sandusky police shows the suspect walk away around a shelf before grabbing several pieces of candy from a jar and returning to the register.

The video (above) shows the suspect give the cashier change for the candy, and when the cashier opens the register, he appears to lunge over the counter and attempt to grab money from its cash drawer with one hand while holding a knife to the cashier in his other hand.

The cashier struggles with the suspect and shuts the cash drawer, and the suspect then flees the store.

Sandusky police, with assistance from Perkins police and Erie County sheriff’s deputies, searched the area for the suspect. Police eventually found and charged Norwalk resident Charles Houghtland, 23.

Police charged Houghtland with three felonies: aggravated robbery, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
