U.S. Marshals and Cleveland police arrested the 15-year-old boy about 8:50 a.m. Tuesday at his mother’s home on Glendale Avenue. He was arrested without incident, U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said.
Another 15-year-old boy charged in the case was arrested on Monday at John F. Kennedy High School, shortly after formal charges were filed against both teens in Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court.
Cleveland.com doesn’t name juvenile criminal suspects unless they're charged as adults.
Both face 25 felony charges, including aggravated murder, murder, attempted murder, felonious assault and firing a gun across a roadway. One of the teens also face a charge of possessing weapons despite having a felony conviction.
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley said his office will seek to have both teens be charged as adults in common pleas court. A Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court judge will ultimately make that decision after a hearing that has not yet been scheduled.
The shooting killed 12-year-old Abdel Bashiti, a 7th-grade student at Parma's Hillside Middle School. Abdel was helping his father at his business, #1 Beauty Supply and Linen, on Buckeye Road and East 116th Street.
The two teens fired at least 20 gunshots at a group of teenagers standing outside the One Stop Liquor store next door, according to police dispatch records.
Abdel and his father walked outside the beauty supply store when they heard the commotion and bullets struck Abdel in his torso and wrist, according to police. His father and other bystanders took the boy back into the beauty supply store and tried to save him before an ambulance arrived.
Five others — all between 14 and 16 years old — were shot but have survived. A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the right side of his head, according to police.
Two others were shot in the leg, one was shot in the groin and another was shot in the torso, police said.
The shooting stunned Abdel’s family, who said he enjoyed playing sports and hanging out with his family. The family had celebrated Thanksgiving together 24 hours before Abdel was killed.
