Norwalk trio earns All-Ohio first team honors

By Norwalk Reflector staff • Updated Dec 3, 2019 at 4:53 PM

COLUMBUS — Three standouts from Norwalk were selected to the first team, and two others to the second team of the Division III football All-Ohio teams, which were announced Tuesday afternoon by a statewide media panel.

The teams were selected by members of the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

On offense, two-time Northwest District Lineman of the Year Trey Leroux was again a first team selection to the offensive line. The 6-foot-8, 330-pound senior helped the Truckers (9-3) earn a state ranking (No. 12, Associated Press poll), a share of the SBC Lake Division title and a first-round home game this season.

An Ohio State University commit, where he will early enroll next month, Leroux had 37 pancake blocks and was the team's left tackle for an offense that averaged 397 yards and 37 points per game.

Also earning first team on offense was senior running back Evan Stumpf and junior kicker Garrison Smith.

Stumpf (5-11, 180) totaled 1,994 yards and 23 touchdowns in the regular season on 218 attempts. In two playoff games, he added 254 yards and a TD on 39 attempts to finish with 2,248 yards and 24 TDs on 257 rushes. It is the third-most yards in a single-season by a running back in program history.

Smith (5-10, 170) finished 50-of-50 on extra points and 11-of-13 on field goals this season, one which was blocked, for 83 points scored. He added 26 touchbacks in a season he kicked seven field goals beyond 40 yards, and two beyond 50 yards — including a program record 53 yards. Smith enters next season having converted 69 straight extra points, which is unofficially the 12th-longest streak in Ohio history.

Earning second team honors on defense was senior defensive lineman Gabe Phillips (6-1, 195) and senior linebacker Alec Maloney (6-2, 226).

In the regular season, Phillips finished with 39 tackles and 10 sacks, while Maloney led the team with 116 tackles, along with four sacks and three interceptions — including one returned for a TD. Adding the playoffs, Maloney had 127 tackles (17.5 for loss), five sacks and the three interceptions, while Phillips finished with 41 tackles (12 for loss) to go with his 10 sacks.
