The baby shower, in honor of the Virgin Mary, will follow the 11 a.m. Mass on Dec. 8 at the Pilgrim Center cafeteria. A reception will begin about 11:45 a.m. Cookies and coffee will be available.
“We invite you to consider donating a baby gift or a cash to donation to this family shower for Mary. No gift wrapping (is) necessary. Abigail is expected to accept these donations on behalf of mothers who rarely receive new gifts for their babies or young children,” shrine spokeswoman Marsha Danhoff said.
“(This is) a generous way to honor the blessed Virgin Mary as we journey with her to Bethlehem.”
The gifts and cash donations — used to purchase special things the mothers or newborns may need — will be given to the Abigail centers in Norwalk and Willard.
Theresa Varos, Abigail executive director, will be present Dec. 8 to express her thanks to all those who donated. She and the center staff members said they are very excited about this outreach event.
“Seldom do the expectant mothers or fathers receive new baby gifts. The new items will be welcomed and greatly appreciated,” Varos added.
“We work with these individuals to help them understand their options by providing encouragement and support, as well as assisting them with their physical needs. Abigail Pregnancy Services strives to be the first call or stop when men and women find themselves in an unexpected pregnancy. Abigail Pregnancy Services does not pass judgement but, rather, offers honest, compassionate (and) straight-forward answers.”
Abigail was founded 30 years ago. The focus is on helping men and women make informed pregnancy decisions.
“Our desire is that we are your first call or stop when you find yourself in an unexpected pregnancy,” according to the Abigail website, www.abigailpregnancyservices.org.
If you are unable to attend any of the events, you may drop off your gift or donation at the shrine gift shop from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
“Christmas can be a season of great joy — a time of giving and receiving, a time of healing and renewed strength, said the Rev. Scott Kramer, shrine rector. “As we celebrate the birth of the Christ child, what better way than to give a gift in honor of new life — a demonstration of pro-life support.”
