SANDUSKY — Edison High School’s team again widened its lead in the Firelands Challenge standings after the third round of the competition. The Chargers led Monroeville by 12 points after Round II and now lead the Eagles by twice that.

While Edison and Monroeville held onto their one-two spots in the standings, the rest of the top five jostled for position in the latest matches. Willard, which had held the third spot, dropped out of the top five teams.

Huron, which won a Round II appeal to secure the fourth spot, moved from fourth to third after the latest round. Margaretta held onto fifth and Norwalk moved into the top five finishing in fourth. Only 12 points separate the teams in second through fifth positions.

The most recent matches proved to be difficult for the competing teams. Edison was the only team to earn a score in the fifties for a match. It capitalized on eight bonus points and eight toss-up points in its home match.

Norwalk came close with a score of 49. It relied on 17 bonus points in its victory at St. Mary’s.

The Round III matches and scores were as follows:

* Edison 55, Willard 32, Port Clinton 31

* Clyde 32, Sandusky 28, New London 18

* Huron 45, Monroeville 43, Bellevue 19

* Margaretta 40, Lakota 34, Western Reserve 15

* Perkins 36, St. Paul 31, Danbury 22

* Norwalk 49, St. Mary 34, South Central 19

The top five teams and their scores after Round III are (the cumulative scores reflect any changes resulting from Round II appeals):

1. Edison 168

2. Monroeville 144

3. Huron 139

4. Norwalk 137

5. Margaretta 132

Round IV matches are scheduled to take place next week. South Central will play Lakota and Perkins in the first match on Tuesday. Monroeville will play St. Mary and Danbury in the second match on Tuesday.
