Nothing fishy about this

Miller’s Market at 117 Whittlesey Ave. has added a new option for the Norwalk community — fresh made sushi.

The seafood rolls will be made fresh by Sushi Star business owner and chef Moe San in store, six days a week, right before customers’ eyes. The meals will be made with grab-and-go and special requests orders available.

Store manager Dave Hisey said he views this service as a way to offer a new unique option, not as a way to compete with other area seafood restaurants.

“We’re just trying to offer something different, just another choice,” he said.

“I think it’s a great fit for Norwalk because people don’t have to drive to Sandusky to get it anymore. I think the younger generation is more into (experimental) foods and I think that we’re making it easier so they don’t have to leave town to do that. We’re trying to keep up with the times. Since we bought the store almost a year and half ago, we’ve been trying to make it better for the people of Norwalk.”

Hisey said since the sushi is ready made that day, locals have a fresh meal at their fingertips that’s as accessible as running into the store, choosing their favorite selection and returning to home or work.

The manager said San is an entrepreneur with a nice business that does a “great job.”

“If you compare it to sushi made someplace else, it is really good,” he said.

San learned how to make sushi in 1996 and started his first business in 2003. Now he also owns a couple of Sushi Star shops in New York and one in Port Clinton.

Originally the seafood was being delivered and stocked, but when business continued to excel for the food’s sale, Hisey “decided, well, let’s just make it here.”

When asked what makes his sushi so good, San said it’s a matter of effort and quality.

“I just do the best as I can,” he said. “It’s going well. The favorite one is tuna and the lobster roll, also the spider roll I make with a salt chip crab, tempora shrimp roll and neocrispy roll.”

Miller’s will offer a special on one of the sushi forms each week. It also will run a Tuesday special where all other flavors will be offered at a 33-percent discount.
