ROCHESTER Jack Hodgkin, 90, of Rochester, died Tuesday at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph's in Lorain, after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 3, 1916 in Rochester to the late Claude and Mattie (Freeman) Hodgkin. He was a life long resident of Rochester, where he was a long time village councilman and the youngest mayor in the U.S. from 1940-1952.
He founded the Rochester Volunteer Fire Department; founded the Rochester Historical Society; and founded the Buffalo Range Sports Club, he raised buffalo for several years. He maintained and ran a steam engine in the Rochester 4th of July Parade.
He was founder and owner of Rochester Cement Block Co. He was a Fire Inspector/Investigator for the State of Ohio Dept. of Commerce; he retired from Lorain County Board of Elections as an investigator - Technician from 1964-1983.
He was past president and member of the New London Schools Board of Education; past vice chairman of Lorain County Republican Executive Committee; and past treasurer and member of the Rochester Rod & Gun Club. He was a member of the FOE; National Buffalo Assoc.; past Master of the Wellington Masonic Lodge No. 127; member of the Al Koran Shrine; Lorain County Shriners Club; a 32nd degree Mason; member of the Ancient Scottish Rite; member of the Eastern Star Althea Chapter No. 438 of Monroeville.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Viola (Lavon) Hodgkin; a son and daughter-in-law, Kim and Ellen Hodgkin of Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Belinda Hodgkin; and a sister, Leona Hodgkin.
Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 S. Main St., Wellington, where Masonic services will be held at 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Alice Elmquist of the Rochester United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in the Rochester Cemetery.
