BELLEVUE — Louis J. Forunato, 88, of Bellevue, died Saturday after a brief illness.

He was born June 5, 1918 in Tiffin to the late Joseph and Pasqualena (Cajoni) Foruanto.

He attended St. Mary's School in Tiffin and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps serving there in 1935 and 1936. He enlisted in the Army March 17, 1941 and was assigned to the Signal Corps in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharge in November 1945 and earned the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award and other Asia-Pacific Theater decorations and citations.

Louis married his beloved wife, Laura (Guemelata) of 54 years on Oct. 4, 1952 and resided in Bellevue until Sept. 2006 when they moved closer to family in Toledo. He was employed at the Whirlpool Corp. in Clyde retiring after 29 years of service in 1980.

He was a life member of the VFW, the Club Amer-Ital and Bellevue Immaculate Conception Church. He enjoyed playing cards, boxing, football and baseball, particularly attending his grandson's games, and was also a hunter and fisherman. Most of all he was a loving, caring and generous husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be remembered for his tremendous sense of humor and pleasant personality.

He is survived by his wife, Laura; a son, Dan; a daughter-in-law, Jeannine (Lovejoy), a grandson, all of Toledo; a sister, Antionette Folk of Tiffin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dan; and sisters, Vita Perna and Nagela Blazer.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Auxter Funeral Home, 1105 Castalia St., Ohio 269 N., Bellevue. The funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bellevue Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bellevue.
