MILAN — Elvin “Ike” Ferres Jr., 80, of Wakeman, died Tuesday at Briarfield of Milan.
He was born Dec. 15, 1927, son of Elvin and Bernice Ferres.
A native of Bellevue, he graduated from Bellevue High School in 1945, where he was a member of the 1945 basketball champs called the Whiz Kids.
He joined the Navy after graduation, serving 39 months as a G.C.A. radar operator. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in education and his master’s degree from Bowling Green State University, where he also acquired his administration degree.
After graduating from Bowling Green State University in 1953, he began his teaching career in Scio, where he had taught and coached for five years.
He came to Wakeman in 1958 from Scio and began his career as a coach, teacher, principal and superintendent of Western Reserve School District for 27 years.
He was a member of the Western Reserve Local Teacher Association, Huron County Teacher Association and the Ohio Educational Association during his career. He was a committee member of Cub Pack 238 of Wakeman and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed coaching, golfing, swimming, watching sporting events and traveling to 48 out of the 50 states.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Fisher, whom he married May 29, 1954 in Norwalk; a son, Donald (Georgette) Ferres of Vermilion; a daughter, Lila (Dan) Lewis of Berlin Heights; three grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three great-step-grandchildren; sisters, Eileen Idle, Bernice Close, Ruth Griffith and Evelyn (John) Hill and brothers, Charles (Yvonne) Ferres, Robert (Louise) Ferres, Ronald Ferres and William Ferres.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Shirley and Judith; a brother, Richard; brothers-in-law, Robert Idle and Art Close and a sister-in-law, Glenda Ferres.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk, where a service will take place at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Norwalk.
