ASHLAND — Joseph P. Tracey, 50, of Ashland, died Tuesday at his home.

He was born May 6, 1957 in Elyria, and had lived in the Ashland area for 15 years.

He was a graduate of Elyria Catholic High School in 1975 and received a Civil Engineering degree from the Lorain County Community College. He also completed the Ohio Peace Officer Training, and received his Ohio EPA Water Operator II and Waste Water I certification.

He worked as a water treatment plant operator and/or wastewater operator for several villages in the area. For the last seven years he was employed at the Big Island Water Works Plant for Sandusky. He also was the owner and head herdsman for the JK Alpaca Farm in Ashland for the last 12 years.

He was a member of various flying associations, including the EAA, AMA, US Ultralight, PRA Association, Sandusky Sailing Club, Thistle Class Association, the Catamaran Club and the Alpaca Owners Breeders Association.

He was a member and past president of the Shenandoah Flying Club. He was an avid model airplane builder all of his life and enjoyed flying hobby airplanes in competition. He enjoyed sailing, catamarans and thistle racing. He was a sportsman pilot and was building his first experimental gyrocopter. He loved traveling, camping and raising and showing Alpacas.

He is survived by his wife, Kristina (Waldron); sisters, Kim (Gill) Ache of Elyria and Barbara Kinard of Shreveport, La.; brothers, Thomas Tracey of Mansfield and Grant Tracey of Elyria; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James “Ted” and Helen (Bridges) Tracey, and a sister, Patricia.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 Saturday at the Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper St., Wakeman. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery on Mason Road near Vermilion.
