SANDUSKY — Philip Opfer Jr., 87, of Sandusky, died Tuesday at the Portland House.  

He was born Feb. 10, 1921 in Berlin Heights.  

He attended Ohio Northern University, and enlisted in the Air Force during World War II.  

He worked on the Ore Boats of the Great Lakes, and was employed by the former New Departure Hyatt, Sandusky.  

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sandusky, the American Legion Post 83, Sandusky, and loved fishing and gardening.  

He is survived by his daughter, Linda S. (Jay) Hoffman of Perrysburg; a son, Donald P. (Barbara) Opfer of Berlin Heights; step children, Bonnie (Bob) Nixon, Dwayne Meyer and Lynn Meyer, all of Sandusky; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helene in 1970; second wife, Kathryn in 1998, parents, Philip and Elsie (Daniels) Opfer Sr.; sisters, Helen Schrader and Mary Opfer, and brother, Fred Opfer.  

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where a memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Mawhirter officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Berlin Heights.
