WAKEMAN - William "Bill" Bailey, 91, a native of Wakeman, died Aug. 29 in Mobile, Ala.
He was a very active member of the communities of Wakeman and Norwalk during his lifetime. He served on the school board, was a volunteer firefighter in both Ohio and Alabama, was a member of the Wakeman Lodge of the Freemasons of Ohio and was active with the Boy Scouts and the Wakeman Redcaps baseball team. He also was an avid card player and an accomplished dancer, being a member of numerous dance clubs. He retired from Harshaw Chemical (Englehard) as a management supervisor. He served in the Navy during World War II.
One might refer to him as an amateur historian due to his extensive travels and knowledge of the United States and Canada. His love of travel eventually brought he and his wife to retirement on the Gulf Coast of Alabama.
He was a former member of the Congregational Church of Wakeman and a member of Warrington Baptist Church in Pensacola, Fla.
He is survived by his sons, Harold (Debbie) Bailey o Bellevue, Gary (Barbara) Bailey of Mobile, Ala., Lynn (Jolene) Bailey of Yorba Linda, Calif., and William (Vivian) Bailey of Lebanon, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and sisters, Dolly Bringman of Westminster, Md. and Barbara (Ross) Baird of Wakeman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50-plus years, Mary Louise Bailey; a son, Robert Bailey; a grandson, Brian Bailey; his parents, Clarence (C.T.) Bailey and Bessie Bailey; and a brother, Bryant "Buster" Bailey.
A memorial service and burial is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Wakeman Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper St., Wakeman.
