COLLINS - William "Bill" R. Hahn, 76, of Collins, died early Thursday morning at Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 18, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio and was a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of Townsend High School in 1949. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a farmer, and had worked for Rotary printing, worked in construction and for General Telephone. He currently was self-employed blacksmith and machine repairman.

He served 44 years with Townsend Township Volunteer Fire Department, was a Townsend Township trustee for 16 years, and was on the Huron County Board of Health for 3 1/2 years, and the Huron County Ag Heritage Committee for 31 years. He was a member of Collins United Methodist Church. He was a member and past Master of East Townsend Masonic Lodge F&AM being raised in 1958. He was a member of Althea Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Northern Ohio Blacksmith's Association (NOB), Western Reserve Artist Blacksmith Association, Artist Blacksmith's Association of North America, Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil, Wakeman American Legion, Huron County Firefighters Association, and the Northwest Ohio Firefighters Association. He was Western Reserve Ruritan Man of the year in 1996 for community service.

He was a demonstrator at the Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil (SOFA) Blacksmith conference, and also demonstrator of blacksmithing at Erie and Huron county fairs, Pioneer Days, Lime Village, local schools, and many other locations throughout the area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and growing sunflowers and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Virginia M. (Cawrse) Hahn of Collins, by his sons and daughters in law, Robert W. and Rozetta (Bee) Hahn of Beaver Dam, Wisc., and Michael K. and Laura A. Hahn, of Collins, and by four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. Hahn in 1971 and Gertrude (Bluhm) Hahn in 1985.

Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Norwalk First United Methodist Church, 60 W. Main St. Norwalk. The Rev. Dr. Roger E. Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in Collins Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Stein Hospice 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio, or to Townsend Volunteer Fire Department, or to the Blacksmith (NOB) scholarship, or to Collins United Methodist Church Fund or to the Donor's Favorite Charity.

I will miss you Bill. He was a great man who I thought of as if he were my own Grandfather. He inspired me in my blacksmithing & was a great mentor. His loss will be deeply felt.

Bill inspired many people in the blacksmithing community including my son Mike and myself. He touched many people at the local craft shows and other events with his skills and knowledge of the craft. We will all miss him.
