GREENWICH - Janet M. Rice, 86, of Greenwich, died Monday at Hillside Acres Nursing Home, Willard after a lengthy illness.
She was born July 27, 1920 in Greenwich to the late Harry H. and Lala Fern (Moser) Crum. She had been a lifelong resident of Greenwich.
She was a 1937 graduate of Greenwich High School and a 1941 graduate of Bowling Green State University . She taught one year at Attica High School as a Business Teacher. Then she went to work at Islays Stores as a manager of bookkeeping. She and her husband operated and later owned Crum’s Hardware Store in Greenwich for 30 years. She retired at the age of 55 and spent winters in Florida for 25 years and traveled to many other places. She was a 60 year member of the O.E.S. and was a worthy Matron in 1951, she was a lifelong member of the Greenwich United Methodist Church. She was a devoted family person. She loved to dance, she loved flowers and was a very good card player.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Rice, whom she married June 6, 1943; daughters and son-in-law, JoAnn McCleery and Susan and Jeff Nagel all of Whitehouse; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Robert McCleery.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Eastman Funeral Home, 49 W. Main St., Greenwich, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Georgette Gaston, of the Greenwich United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenwich Greenlawn Cemetery.
