Robert (Bob) D. Gardner, 81, of Norwalk, Ohio died Saturday morning, October 20, 2012 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, Ohio.

He was born June 9, 1931 in Lodi, Ohio to the late Brooks and Lucile (Garver) Gardner and had been a Norwalk resident since 1979. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Norwalk, The Norwalk Elks, The Norwalk Eagles, Cuyahoga Falls Moose, Medina Masonic Lodge A&M Chapter and Commandery and American Legion Post 41. He also served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a very proud member of the 508th Airborne Division, Flying Red Devils.

Bob worked for 31 years for A&P Grocery store until it closed and in 1979 he founded Gardner's Cardinal Supermarket. He worked there until his retirement in the late 1990's. During this time he was named Progressive Grocer of the Year in 1985.

He enjoyed boating, water sports and traveling. One of his greatest trips was to the Grand Canyon in 2002 when he hiked, with Laura Lee and friends, to the bottom of the canyon, stayed at Phantom Ranch, and hiked back out.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years Laura Lee (Beall) Gardner, sons Scott (Julie) Gardner, Brad Gardner and Barry Gardner, Norwalk, by his 9 grandchildren, Cory, Elise, Andrew, Casey, Bradley, Amy, Lauren, Todd and Luke. He is also survived by 5 great-grand children Isabella, Leila, Ava, Andrew and Emerson. He is also survived by his sister in law, Jackie Ross of Toledo, Ohio. Bob was preceded in death by his brother Charles. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Kyle in 2010.

Friends may call in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio, on Tuesday October 23,2012 from 4:00 until 7:00pm and on Wednesday October 24, 2012 in the First Presbyterian Church, 21 Firelands Boulevard, Norwalk, Ohio from 10:00am until time of service at 11:00am. The Rev. Adrian Doll will officiate.
