GREENWICH Lawrence "Larry" Harold Shull Jr., 78, of Greenwich, died Saturday at Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky after a long illness.

He was born July 4, 1928 in Mecca, to the late Lawrence H. and Eva (Barrett) Shull.

As a young man Larry enlisted in the Navy, serving his country during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after 21 years of service. He moved to Greenwich in 1970. After the service he had worked at Nickels Bakery and later retired from Brooker Brothers in Norwalk in 1990.

He was a member of the Ripley Church, Greenwich.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking, woodworking, gardening, taking short trips, family get togethers and "desserts of all kinds." He was a quiet, gentle, kind hearted person and was very special to those who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen (Thompson) Schlenbaker Shull, whom he married July 9, 1970; a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence "Butch" and Debbie Shull of Naples, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jack Burke of Naples, Fla.; stepchildren, Diane (Larry) Sanders of Greenwich, Danny (Donna) Schlenbaker of Maumee and Bob (Vera) Schlenbaker of Wellington; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Shull.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Eastman Funeral Home, 49 W. Main St., Greenwich. Friends also may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ripley Church, 4130 S. Edwards Road, Greenwich. The Rev. David Cobb will officiate. Burial with military rites will follow in Edwards Grove Cemetery, Greenwich.
