A Norwalk husband and wife accused of burglarizing a woman's residence were indicted by a Huron County grand jury Wednesday. On June 20, Zachary R. Chaffee, 25, and Kayla Chaffee, 23, both of 12 Bouscay Ave., were at a party and reportedly decided to break into one woman's home while she was at the same party, Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said.

A trailer full of bailed straw caught on fire Tuesday night at "Heyman's Haymakers' in Monroeville. One firefighter, Travis McGrady, had to be taken to Fisher-Titus Medical Center for heat exhaustion. He was treated and released a couple of hours later, Huron River Joint Fire District Chief Tom Beck said Wednesday.

In an example of cooperation between the city of Norwalk and Huron County, Old State Road was paved last week. The paving of Old State between East Main and the Milan village limits might sound simple, but it really isn't, according to local officials, because the road goes in and out of the city limits and township.

BERLIN TOWNSHIP - Firelands Regional Medical Center plans to build a medical office building on property it recently acquired. Spokeswoman Leslie Mesenburg said once the hospital receives the deed, more details will be released. Plans call for the building to stand one story and comprise 2,000 square feet.

CLARKSFIELD TOWNSHIP - A New London man is in custody after attempting to allegedly burglarize a Fitchville River Road home Tuesday. "At about 3:30 p.m., a woman came home to her Fitchville River Road house and noticed a red automobile in the driveway,' Huron County Sheriff's Lt. Annette McLaughlin said.

An arbitrator has upheld that the late January firing of former Huron County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Montana was justified. Sheriff Dane Howard fired Montana for violating a last chance agreement he had with Howard and the union representing Montana, the Ohio Patrolman's Benevolent Association. That agreement was dated Nov. 9. "It's been a long process. I'm glad it's over with,' Howard said Tuesday about the arbitration. "We'll move forward from here.'

It won't be long before outdoor dining at Berry's Restaurant is a reality. Norwalk city council approved legislation Tuesday night that will effectively allow a land swap between the city and Berry's. Berry's will receive a portion of Bresson Park, while the city keeps a small piece of the park, an easement for foot traffic and the former doctor's office property a couple lots down, which Doug Berry recently purchased. The city also will receive $18,000. Berry wants to establish outdoor dining and serve alcohol as well.

State Superintendent Deb Delisle recognized Norwalk and Monroeville high schools as two of the promising high schools of Ohio that garnered national attention. Delisle, in her letter Monday, called this week "an eventful one' at the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) as the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) announced it will be releasing the list of finalist states for second round of "Race to the Top' at 1 p.m. today. Delisle said the ODE plans to "communicate the list of finalists' to school officials once it is released from the USDOE.
