Melanie Boose is a lucky woman. She lived in the upstairs apartment in the Uptown Norwalk building that housed the Shamrock Tavern, Cameo Pizza and Pat's Barber Shop that burned Sunday night. Firefighters said the North Hester Street structure is a total loss with about $140,000 in property damage and another $100,000 for the contents. Boose was taking a shower when the fire was reported at 6:43 p.m.

The Fund for Huron County is accepting applications for grants. Applications are due by Sept. 1. The Fund makes grants to Huron County non-profit agencies.

Abbi Obermiller, who made national headlines in June after she ran away from her grandparents home in Norwalk, was released to the custody of her parents Monday. Obermiller, 17, had been placed in the temporary custody of her brother Andy Obermiller of Plymouth since July 9. Obermiller, of North Fairfield, was in Huron County Juvenile Court on Monday for a hearing. After a discussion, Obermiller admitted to the charge of obstructing official business in exchange for the charge of unruliness being dismissed.

Norwalk residents are being asked to "stuff the bus" with school supplies for needy children. From 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13, a school bus will be parked at the Norwalk City Schools central office on Benedict Avenue. The event is part of Project Leadership and was the idea of founding board member Judy Sommers. "It will be just that one day," said board member Virginia Pohling, the Norwalk superintendent from 1993 through 2002.

Norwalk Mayor Sue Lesch called it an institution. One of Norwalk's landmarks took an awful beating Sunday night when fire broke out in an apartment above the Shamrock Tavern on Hester Street.

It's full-steam ahead for Willard resident Gregory Scott Davidson. Davidson, 42, and a Democrat, is facing Republican incumbent Terry Boose and Libertarian challenger Bob Williams in the race to represent Ohio Statehouse's 58th district, which consists of Huron County and portions of Lorain and Seneca counties. Davidson's campaign recently stopped at the Reflector. "It's going great,' he said of the campaign. "I've had a very good response.'

For almost a year now, many Huron County offices have been operating on a shortened work week. But as sales tax collection starts to pick up and income tax revenue shows some life for the first time in years, could it be time to extend those work weeks back to 40 hours, making many offices open again after noon on Fridays? "I've been saying since May this is a top priority, getting the employees back to 40 hours,' County Commissioner Larry Silcox said. "But it just did not happen because of finances,' he added.
