Cedar Point’s new wing roller coaster taking shape

Steel pieces that will become keyhole towers for GateKeeper arrive at Sandusky amusement park.

Jan 24, 2013

The first of four steel pieces that will soon become the keyhole towers for Cedar Point’s new wing roller coaster, GateKeeper, arrived at Wednesday afternoon.

Measuring nearly 75 feet, it started its journey at about 8 a.m. that day at Clermont Steel Fabricators in Batavia and required a special permit to travel, arriving in Sandusky about 3 p.m.

Each of the four pieces weighs about 65,000 pounds and will be assembled to create two towers that stand 100 feet high when placed on their foundations at Cedar Point’s new main gate.

GateKeeper will narrowly slot through the openings in these towers, adding to the suspense of a ride that already boasts the longest track, longest drop and most inversions of any wing coaster on the planet.

The remaining pieces are expected to arrive later this week and early next week to be assembled. The ride structure is about 50 percent complete and on track to be ready for Cedar Point’s opening day, May 11.
