Isn't it cool how our tree decorating will culminate with a "night under fire " as we light up Norwalk's CHRISTmas tree Saturday evening ? Thanks to all for making, such a wonderful event happen.

What a nice compliment.Maybe we can have more nice comments thru the Christmas Season !

@ Mr. Cannon:

Thanks for writing the piece on P&R.

IMO, you recited a eulogy that "someone" from the NR (unless I missed it) shoulda performed in kind.

Good job!

Cliff Cannon
Thu, 11/22/2012 - 10:15pm

@ Contango: Thank-you for your thought's. Not only due I totally agree, that " someone" from the 'Reflector' should have wrote this essay,I thought I was that 'someone'

I will be forever grateful to Joe for allowing me to interview the Perkins, then for publishing the "P&R" story. However, there was a ---major disagreement--- between us regarding the format. It was suppossed to be a reporter writing a story, complete with a picture of "P&R" headlining it.Not a 'letter to the editor' with my ugly mug in it.

The 'letter' format--- in my opinion--- took away my second objective, which was to attempt to inspire a driven, hard working dreamer to take over the business.

Bottom line, is that borrowing from the 'all politics are local' mantra. So is all business. Joe being a newspaper man extraordinare, knows what sells. So he went with the 'letters' approach. Me,like countless others being lost with out our beloved hardware store, would have preferred he hadn't done that, because it so blurred the message

@ CC:

My apologies as I did not realize that you were in the employ of the NR. Any shekels or strictly free gratis?

IMO, tell Mr. Centers to give you a freer hand. If it looked like a "reporter" wrote it, it might have appeared like the paper actually gave a sh*t.

Suggestion: More "advetorials" highlighting current sm. businesses rather than the recently departed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adv...

BTW: Didn’t P&R begin on Main St.? I vaguely remember Western Auto as well.

I also found it interesting that during the CC mtg. that according to the NR, Mayor Duncan mentioned the Janesville layoffs, but no mention of P&R.

As is said: When one business lays off one hundred people, it makes the news. However, when one hundred businesses lay off one person each it's not reported.

Cliff Cannon

@ Contango : No apology needed, as I am not an employee of the 'Reflector'. When,I write,it is always free gratis.( Don't forget, what Samuel Johnson said; " Only a fool writes for free)

Still, because of Joe Centers granting me the priveldge of writing in this case about---the P&R hardware closing. I am very grateful to him for the many opportunity's he grants me to write, as well as for all the mentoring he does with me.So when,I refer to him as ---the boss--- it is because he is

P&R started in a garage at 117 Pleasant, then was where Sherry's coFFee is now. With Western Auto being where 'Battles ins. is currently.

Agree, " advetorials" would be big helps ( witness, the out pouring after the story on Schilds IGA's meal tree)

@ Cliff Cannon:

Thanks for the info.

Perhaps I'm confusing P&R with Perfected. Who had the toy store in the basement?

Cliff Cannon
Thu, 11/22/2012 - 10:13pm

@ Contango: 'toy store in the basement' ? Perfected had a basement,I do believe. Yet,can not place the toy store

Thank you Summit Motorsports Park!!! As they are the ones who donated the decorations, equipment, and manpower to make this happen.

if in fact Cliff cannon is considered to be an employee of the Norwalk Reflector, I find it highly inappropriate that he blurts out other bloggers identities in his writings.. Why have a policy that anyone can post under an assumed name, only to have the newspapers employees telling everyone who's identity is whom??? You already have one employee who is telling anyone who asks her , who someone is... and I think that Ms McLaughlin should be reprimanded for her betrayal of the bloggers identities, especially since she is an employee... Now that Cliff, seems to be an employee, I would warn anyone who writes blogs.. if you do not want to be identified by various employees who should know better, then maybe you should not blog at all... I thought that the idea of writing anonymously was to be able to be given the freedom to speak you mind, even though it might have toi step on people who are your friends and neighbors and even relative's toes, you know, as in FREE speech... but employees Cannon and McLaughlin seem to think that they can "out" anyone who they think needs to be knocked down a couple of pegs, taking away their anonymity thus making things that were meant as an observation and even a suggestion .. is now being turned into an insulting comment on a personal level.........in my opinion

sorry if my opinion is NOT clouded by my nose being snugly placed against C Cannons butt like yours is....I am entitled to my opinion, especially when it is truthful, just as you are entitled to yours..

Thu, 11/22/2012 - 10:38pm

@ Mr.Family: Do you remember writing this to me on 'facebook' ? Perhaps, you should remember who all you told who "outed" you before you accuse others of it.

Cliff.. it was never my intention to "bash" you anyone on there I just wanted to give my opinions and discuss ideas and opinions on topic.. maybe you have not read on there for too long, but I have been there for almost 3 years, and ever since the start Kat has tormented me for anything I say.. then she had her "gang" Deer Dave, Pugsly, Most wanted, and so many other who continually put my name on there telling everyone who I wasmily:

P.S. Will gladly put every word you wrote from 'facebook' on here if you like.

Contango: Before,I ask you once again to help me,may I ask : Isn't the tree lighting totally cool ? ( No doubt, Norwalk rocks) Then, let me thank-you for allowing me to " get it oFF my chest" about the formating of the "P&R " essay. If you hadn't brought it up,I may well have exploded

Thankfully, " The Boss" tells me the 'Reflector' internet get's about 100,000 'hits' a day. That means, thanks to you---hopefully-- a driven, hard working dreamer could 'hit' our chat, then would be inspired by the underlying thought, that he/she could be--- the dreamer---- that reopen's Norwalk's hardware store.

Then, may I send my gratitude for suggesting " Sinatra live" is the music to listen too ? Got him in the record player doing " classic Sinatra" live as I write. And geuss what ? Even Sinatra thinks " F's" should be capitalized. ( Being from Hoboken N.J., he would have known of Fanny Farmer since birth)

So how do I know he loves Fanny Farmer and want's " F's" capitalized ? Because when he is getting a " Kick out of you" he literally spits out the "F's" when he sings " If I hear even one riFF...." as well as " it would bore me ter...riFFic...ally too... Never knew Sinatra loved Fanny Farmer. Thanks for leading me to that discovery. :)

Now,here is where you can help me once again, should you desire. What can be done to make 'Mr Family" understand, that when he goes into his wild ridiculous attack mode,he only makes himself look stupid ?

Consider, his latest attack. Despite your admonition that because of Thanksgiving he "give it rest" he persist's in spewing his really wierd hatred. Certainly, "in kind" rebuttal, which would be oh,so easy,is one option. Yet,that lacks not only class, worse,he seems to feed upon insult's so why do that ?

Besides,he always " kind enough" to " bring the rope for his own hanging". Check out his latest garbage. He attacks me as well as Mrs. McLaughlin for "outing him" right ?

So despite,my posting--- HIS OWN WORDS---- blaming others for "outing him". He can't/won't admit that he has another diFFerent 'problem' with me. (No matter, how many postings by him depicting me as someone who eats his young. Seriously, how many ways can one say: " I hate you " ?)

Rather, despite, being proven beyond doubt he is a "liar" right here. He add's to his already er,ah, " unique" reputation by calling me "a liar". How crazy is that ?

So any wisdom, you could oFFer him, that would stop him from making, not only a fool of himself, but, better yet, allow for our beloved Norwalk to be hopefully helped here in 'blogville' by a meaningful, intelligent debate is what I ask you provide.

P.S. If you can pull this oFF. Next I will ask you to walk across water. :) Thanks, for becoming a treasured friend

@ CC:

Regarding your “issue” with fellow bloggers: As I've written before, IMO, ignoring is the best insult to childish nonsense.

I studied Behaviorism yrs. ago. Any response only tends to reinforce the behavior. Ignoring tends to extinguish the behavior.

Also, I once heard it said: That if you change your behavior to get the people who don't like you now to like you; the people who like you now wouldn't like you. What therefore have you 'really' accomplished?

While growing up, Norwalk was such a great town at Christmas time. It seemed "magical." Woolworth’s, Penney’s, Ringholt’s and Meyers, Dawson’s, Bob's News Stand, Fisher Music, the ringing of the bells at the Salvation Army kettles, the tree and Santa house in front of the courthouse, the seeming throngs of shoppers along Main St. on a Fri. night, etc, etc.

I surely miss it. For many if not most, it would be like trying to explain ice to a Bedouin.

Cliff Cannon
Mon, 11/26/2012 - 6:31am

@ Contango: Got to agree with you on Christmas magic here in the Maple city. It was indeed a beautiful thing to see downtown packed in our youth. Of course,it is very beautiful downtown now. Certainly, everyone who helped make it so special deserves a hand.

"love me,hate me,just don't ignore me" Does that sum up your advice? Well,I will certainly continue ignoring such stupidity. Although, going to a 3rd. party ( in this case you) so that with out saying a word to the oFFender, they get the message---loud and clear--- as to just how stupid they look. Can sometimes be helpful too.

Great day to you.

P.S. " trying to explain ice to a bedouin" Great analogy

I was surveying the comments on a story on one of the business websites that I read each morning and came across the following. For your amusement:

"Let's see, what little pill will I take this morning to get me through the day...
stupid comment pill ... check, no manners pill ... check, ... oh, and almost forgot, how to be an *sshole pill ... double check"

@ Contango: " Business Insider" is spot on here. Worse, people in general, as no doubt you've noticed, seem to keep getting more selfish and rude by the day. I just don't understand getting up in the morning thinking mean, selfish thoughts and feeling like the world owes me something.Do you ?

Attempted,to watch Jane Austens " Pride and Predjudice" last night on T.C.M. As usual, the t.v. won. I made about 1/2 of it,then was asleep.( I am bragging here. One of the best things that ever happened to me was to be bored by t.v.) Of course, the dialog was incredible and I wished we still spoke the kings english, but that's another story.

What it did remind me of though, is why authors like Sophicles,Shakespere,Jane Austen,Agatha Christie and so on, will be read for, forever. As they, notably touch upon the inward thoughts of man with his constant conflicts of love/hate,ambition/inspiration,evil,grief,misfortunes and jealousy's to name a few.

Or put another way,the things about mankind that are timeless,as well as universal. Because, obviously of all the great changes in human history, the one thing that has not changed is.....man. ( Which means of course, sometimes if you give him a computer and let him start spitting out hatreds, the coal red eyes of the cave men start glowing and how can one combat that?)

Your last paragraph reminded me of a saying by one of my favorite economist-historians, Niall Ferguson: History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nia...

I'm also reminded of the old analogy: If you give a room full of chimpanzees each a typewriter, don't expect them to write Shakespeare.

So thank-you very much ( And if you'd like to keep going.....:)

Nothin' profound:

I've read that sense of smell memories are located deep in the brain and are often the longest lasting.

I was remembering the sweet aroma of Meek's Bakery at Christmas time while buying a dozen or so Christmas cookies for the family.

I also often liked to stop in after school for a cookie.
