'If You Believe' candidates night

Richard Russell
Sep 26, 2012

The “If You Believe” group held a Candidate’s Night on Monday evening at the Freedom Center in Norwalk. Candidates for all contested races on the November ballot were invited by the group to the event. Terry Boose, Jan Tkach, Larry Silcox and Gary Bauer made remarks and answered questions from the audience. Matthew Lark, Robert Sherwin, Christina Raftery, Tom Dunlap, Sharon Ward and Fred Eldred were not in attendance.

I find this very odd that ALL of the incumbents were in attendance, but none of their challengers. This makes me wonder if everyone was invited, OR if the non-incumbents were invited at the last minute just so the organizers could say that they invited everyone. Hmmmmm . . . . Something just doesn't seem right here.

All of the candidates for the contested races in Huron County were invited, well in advance as far as I know. Incumbent Commissioners Bauer and Silcox and incumbent State Representative Terry Boose attended. Jan Tkach is not an incumbent, but is running for Recorder.

Everyone, please read my entire comment here. We were, indeed, all invited, to a candidates night on the WRONG DATE. Robert F. Sherwin

AHHHH Yes. We see good 'ole boy politics at works here folks. Remember this come November. The status quo needs broken. Vote all incumbents out!

Everyone was invited, from what I have heard, but since this was held at the Republican headquarters, I don't think many Democrats wanted to go. I'm pretty sure those in attendance were going to vote R in November, so they probably skipped this event.

Candidates for all contested races in Huron County-- D's, R's, and L's -- were invited. Yes, only the R's decided to attend. The Freedom Center on Seminary Street is not the current Republican Headquarters -- that is down the street on Benedict Avenue.

Where does the Republican Central and Executive Committees hold their meetings? Where is the Republican Party Election-Night gathering? If either question is answered with "The Freedom Center" then that's their headquarters.

And, even if it WAS the "Republican Headquarters" those absent candidates owe it to their constituents to have shown up and say what they had to say.

Why would they waste their time - it was a Conservative Group that is only going to vote Republican. It's like conservatives voting for Romney/Paul even though they didn't support the Farm Bill. Some people simply vote party lines, and these people do. Those that didn't show up don't own them anything.

@ Guy on a Buffalo:

Between the Dems and the Repubs, it's pretty much the difference between rational and irrational arguments.

Other than emotional appeal, the Dems got squat. Whereas the Repubs aren't so afraid of hard numbers and economics.

Again, Richard, see my comment from today. You, and the "IfYouBelieve" group owe some serious apologies, in writing, in your paper. Robert F. Sherwin

And, sir, it is a dis-service to the Norwalk Reflector that you comment on your own article. Especially with false information. Thre were several gentlemen from your beloved "IfYouBelieve" group that approached me last night and shook my hand telling me that I did a great job. This was AFTER I was told thast due to the debate hteir candidates night , AGAIN, in October 8th was cancelled. They shook my hand knowing that they lied to my face! They even told me that if I came to one of there meeting in October they would give me a moment to speak.

Yes, sir, I can and I will comment on my own "article" -- which in this case is just a bunch of pictures of an event that was held in our coverage area -- because it is my right. It is also encouraged by our editorial staff and I will continue to do so, if for no other reason than to set the record straight.

I was told, and the information given with the pictures, was that all candidates had been invited to this candidate's night event. If there was a miscommunication between you and the organizing group, that is between you and them.

thank you Terry Boose, for showing the total lack of respect for your office by wearing something so casual and inappropriate as a tee shirt to a meeting such as this.. This was NOT a pig roast, or back yard get together to informally discuss ideas.. If you look around, everyone else seems to be in a suit and tie, showing that at the very least they have respect for the positions that they either have or hope to get... I think that your lack of good judgement shines through clearly here, and since it is basically your judgement that we would either support of oppose you on...I for one, am anxiously counting down the days until I can vote to show you what I think about the job you have done..maybe you were too busy to notice all of the "Hoopla" that was caused depending on which Presidential candidates were and which were not wearing a Flag lapel pin, it should have been obvious to you that details matter.... sorry you missed the boat, or vote is a better term

@ swiss family:

Doesn't appear that Mr. Boose combed his hair either.

IMO, he looks and dresses like the majority of the constituency that he represents.

Maybe suits for men and dress for the ladies should come back in style?

Heck, Norwalk used to have at least three stores in town where men could buy suits - all 'long' gone.

I guess times and styles have just changed sf.

that would be fine Kat... when he is in public or at home or at a picnic or whatever he does on his personal time.. I would think that this gathering was to show their sincere respect for the job up for grabs, and if you want to show that you are taking it seriously, most Normal people would dress appropriately, meaning dress up at least a little..... does it escape you to see that almost all of the other invited candidates are in suits??? well there is a reason for that,if they are going to be accepted by the people to represent them, most normal people would want someone who takes the job seriously.. there is a time and place for tee shirts, sandals, shorts etc... I don't think that a formal gathering where you are trying to get the people's confidence, approval, and vote is one of them...

You sound like Congress! Not going to like or approve anything they do????? No wonder this country is messed up! And calling our revered President a Bozo????? A lot of Presidents in the past spit tobacco in the White House and worse! Obviously you are just a hater, no matter what he does, just like the tea partiers and most of Congress!

swissy cheese the only one showing lack of respect are the candidates who failed to show up or offer a reason and you for your continued negative responses on all subjects....
