By now I should know better, but the Huron County Fair still sneaks up on me in August. I know it has been in August for decades now, but I still think of the fair as a September thing.

Main Street Norwalk (MSN) held their Upstairs Tour Thursday. It was a great event, touring Norb Smith's amazing transformation of the building at Seminary and Benedict was like walking into another world. Luxurious is an understatement and too easily describes the result of the last 15 years Norb has dedicated to working on this building.

Jeff Franklin believes he can strongly influence the direction of a new library in Arizona. And for good reason: The former Norwalk resident is the first-ever librarian of the newly opened Dewey-Humboldt Library, in the town 85 miles north of Phoenix. Franklin worked at the Norwalk Public Library for 12 years and moved to Arizona earlier this year. He has been Dewey-Humboldt's librarian for about a month, and is preparing for the library's grand opening. In addition to Franklin, whose position is paid, eight volunteers currently help out in the library. Read the rest of this story in Today's Reflector...

Are you getting tired of humdrum sports? Of catching the same bass in the same farm ponds? Or shooting just one more woodchuck? Or loafing along a creek trying for bullheads and sundaubers? If that's your problem well into this long, hot summer, there's a sport that's not only exciting, but just a little dangerous and not for the faint of heart. They call it turtle grabbing.

It's Huron County Fair time again. Like the 4-H and FFA student exhibits and animal judging events, the library also shows stuffed animals and winning floral arrangements. The Town and Country Garden Club has been decorating the library's Christmas tree and mantelpiece over the holidays for over 30 years. Younger library patrons give the garden club's bear in the children's room first prize over our many stuffed storybook characters. At the beginning of summer "Reda" was wearing a yellow polka-dot bikini and now "Browser" is dressed as a detective with a deerstalker hat, trench coat and magnifying glass representing our "Get a Clue@Your Library" mystery summer reading program.

While Huron County 4-Hers spend thousands of hours collectively working on various projects, many people donate hundreds of hours each summer getting the fairgrounds all spruced up for the annual fair. Most volunteers work on regular maintenance projects or flowers, but at least one group has raised almost $12,000 to pay for a major addition. The Horse Council, spurred on by a suggestion of the Rocking H 4-H club, has worked since last summer to buy and install a new two-story announcer's booth for the Weisenberger Arena.

With true 4-H spirit, Maria Zimmerman got an idea and then made it happen. Thanks to her efforts, 2007 fairgoers can move to the music of the new Huron County 4-H band. Zimmerman, a Western Reserve senior in the Hartland New Horizons club, has played saxophone since fifth grade. When her family attended the Lorain County Fair last summer, they noticed a sign advertising a 4-H band.

If you have had a chance to visit the Huron County Fairgrounds you will see that there has been a lot of work done. Fair board members, 4-H clubs and volunteers have painted, cleaned and planted during the summer. If you go to the fair, now it's time for you to do your part. Every piece of litter on the fairgrounds and in the camping and parking lots hurts. Every piece of gum, every sandwich wrapper, every cigarette butt just plain looks bad.
