Every area angler knows that Lake Erie yellow perch bite all 12 months of the year, including under the ice, but it's just in recent weeks that the perch season really began. The fish have had long months to grow, so catches will run larger than usual, and since they're feeding up for winter, action can be fast enough in the right place to fill a 30 fish limit in a very short time. Possibly more important, autumn perching is usually done in crisp, cool weather under a blue sky with fluffy white cumulus clouds. A perfect time to fish.

"I agree, enough is enough," Jim Wiedenheft said. "Come up with a better argument full of facts or let it go." Wiedenheft is executive director of the Huron County Development Council. He said Jim Sitterly's campaign to have the $1 increase in the real estate conveyance fee approved recently by county commissioners put on the ballot is misleading.

There aren't many issues or candidates to be elected Tuesday. I urge you, however, to go to the polls and cast your vote, especially the residents in the first ward where a person is to be elected to city council to represent us. I have known Lynn Chapin for a long time. She has been a resident of the first ward for many years and knows the needs of the residents.

The world is experiencing an upheaval the likes of which has not been seen since the Industrial Revolution. Industry was good to Ohio. The Buckeye State went from frontier backwater to major economic center one of the most populous states in the country in less than a century. Whether Ohio will return to the top of the heap or continue its slide bottomwards along with the collapse of 20th-century-style industry is largely a result of what we do with one thing: education.

Meteorites or "shooting stars" are not uncommon. We have two or three good shows of them every year. Had we been alive and aware in 1833, however, we'd have seen a show of them we'd never have forgotten. The early morning hours of November 13, 1833, were ever after known as The Night The Stars Fell. As early as two or three o'clock in the morning some people saw the start of a brilliant meteorite show which reached its zenith at four or five o'clock, and of course disappeared at daybreak. It was witnessed in most of the eastern states such as Ohio, Michigan, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, New York, and in Alabama and Tennessee. There was eventually a report of this extreme show being seen in some parts of France. The sky was never darkened or even dimmed during this time. It has been estimated that 10,000 meteors per hour crossed the sky.
