Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Yes, I'm still a bit annoyed I missed the Slayer concert last week because of the snow. But that happens from time to time. But to balance out that misery, Rush announced they are planning to release their new CD, "Snakes & Arrows" on May 1. The new single is called "Far Cry" and should be on the radio March 13. Unconfirmed tour dates began to trickle in, including a June date at Nashville's Starwood Amphitheatre. That's where Rush began the 2004 tour and I was there.

I am not a "formal" person. I rarely go anywhere that requires me to get dressed up and talk to strangers. Recently, though, I had to do just that. I attended the "gala" to benefit the Norwalk City Schools Endowment Fund. A colleague of mine told me how she was planning to wear a beautiful, long black gown. As I prepared for the evening, I kept wondering if my one "fancy" outfit was good enough. I stopped worrying, because at that point I didn't have a choice it fit, and it was my only possible outfit.

I was raised in the country, the outskirts of Fitchville to be exact. There were fields to the south, fields to the west, horses across the road and a kindly, retired couple next door. Life was good. Fast forward several decades. Now I live in the country on the outskirts of Norwalk. There are fields to the west, fields to the north, horses across the road, and a kindly, retired couple just up the road next door. Life is good. By good, I mean strange. Is that Twilight Zone music I hear?

You hear all the time that Huron County has a host of amazing people doing great things to build a tight-knit, caring community. It's an easy, clichd line that makes everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside, like the thought of puppy dogs, kittens and grassy meadows. But, the thing is, it's really true. In the world of journalism we try to have cold hard facts and evidence to present before making such statements. Well, the evidence will be presented Monday in the Reflector's final Firelands Insights edition People.

MONROEVILLE North Central EMS transported three people to Fisher-Titus Medical Center with minor injuries after a two-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon near the Monroeville village limits. Gerald J. Link, 53, of 5557 Edmunds Road, Bellevue, was heading west on U.S. 20 when he went left of center and sideswiped the vehicle driven by Monroeville resident Melissa R. Hollada, 28, of 66 S. Main St. about 3:45 p.m. Link's car then went off the left side of the road and slid into Hillside Park, Monroeville Police Sgt. Frank Gleason said. Hollada's two girls, ages 1 and 2, were in the vehicle. The mother, her older daughter and Link all went to the hospital with minor injuries, while the youngest girl was not hurt and went home with her father. "It's a good thing both children were in child restraints," the officer said.

Paper or plastic? It may not be a big dispute for most of us, but a Norwalk police report indicates a local man reportedly got so upset over his mother's choice of grocery bags that he threatened to shoot her. Read the rest of this story in Today's Reflector...

A former Huron County recorder is expected to temporarily take over as Huron County treasurer starting March 1. Huron County Democratic Chairman Richard Hauser sent a letter to the county commissioners Monday recommending Constance Hipp as "acting treasurer." Current Treasurer Roland Tkach was elected in November to serve as auditor. However, the situation is complicated because auditor John Elmlinger is retiring Feb. 28 because of Ohio Public Employees Retirement System rules even though Tkach's term does not officially begin until March 12, Hauser said.

Fewer people agreed with the Gravelles' sentence than claimed "I just moved to this country and I have never heard of the Gravelles." Only 12 percent of respondents in last week's online poll said the Gravelles "got exactly what they deserved," while 15 percent purported to be immigrants. Forty-five percent said the Gravelles "got off easy," and 29 percent said "the punishment didn't fit the crime."

A Willard attorney representing the estate of Connre Dixion, the Monroeville child killed by her foster parent Paul Efaw, alleges in court documents that Huron County Department of Job & Family Services (HCDJFS) employees knew Efaw had an uncontrollable temper before becoming a foster parent. In documents filed Friday, attorney James Martin also states that HCDJFS and the county commissioners who were in office in 2004 "had complaints in their very own files regarding Paul Efaw over a period of 1985 to 1997. Defendants even found that Mr. Efaw had committed physical abuse and emotional treatment of his own children."

I have been a member of the Huron County Humane Society for many years. I met a great group of people with a worthy cause and joined to help build the current facility on Woodlawn Avenue. For the "Grand Opening" I asked former Norwalk Reflector publisher, Steve Trosley, if we (the Reflector) could sponsor a "Cutest Pet" contest to help raise funds to support the day-to-day operations. Building a building is only a part of the operation, funds were needed to keep it running. Generously, he accepted and one of the biggest fundraisers for the HCHS was started. Each year since the grand opening, the Norwalk Reflector has sponsored this event. The advertising department has gathered sponsors and prizes and has donated much space to promote and encourage this event. Our new publisher, Andy Prutsok, volunteered space on our new Web site to showcase all of the entries. Schild's IGA also provided space for gathering votes to help the success of this fundraiser. I'm proud this community as a whole could put "Fun" in a fundraiser.

I was quite taken back by the article that appeared in the Monday Reflector accusing the Huron County Humane Society of "cheating" so that a board member would win the contest. As a former board member and someone who has long been a supporter of the Humane Society, I cannot recall a board member ever winning the cutest pet contest in the past, although the board members have been very supportive, participated in the contest and many other fundraisers that are conducted during the year to raise funds to operate the Shelter. A little research into the Reflector records would have proven this allegation false past winners were not board members or associates. I was very disappointed that the Reflector chose to print this woman's unsubstantiated (as stated in the article) allegations, let alone put an article on the front page of the newspaper. When volunteers work hard to provide a service to the community, it is very disheartening that our hometown paper is willing to print unsubstantiated accusations of cheating and fraud.
