A new section of the Rails to Trails project in northern Ohio was opened late last year from the village of Collins east to DeRussey Road. This follows the right of way of what was originally the Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad, which was chartered in 1850.
The T, N & C ran from Toledo east through Fremont to Bellevue, Monroeville, Norwalk, Collins, Wakeman and on east to join with the CCC rail line at Grafton. A few years later, it was completed to Cleveland. In January of 1853, the first train ran from Grafton to the Maumee River at Toledo. This completed the railroad link from New York City to Chicago and eventually became part of the transcontinental rail span after the Civil War. I've written the story of those early railroad days several times before.
