Some people say certain things are inevitable, like death and taxes. Norwalk residents, especially in the city's third ward, might want to add high weeds and grass at the former human services building on Benedict Avenue to that short list. Almost on cue, each year when spring hits and the rain comes, the grass grows out of control at the run-down 190 Benedict Ave. location.

MONROEVILLE - Monroeville High School senior Carl Black didn't expect to receive a $20 bill from the motivational speaker who addressed the student body Friday. The other students probably didn't expect to receive bear hugs from the speaker or learn that he has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Black liked the straightforward manner in which Dr. Stephen Sroka spoke to him and fellow students about the dangers of drugs, bullying and the power of words, among other things.

A few weeks ago I had two inquiries as to the name of the Norwalk High School athletic teams before they were called the Truckers. The Truckers name came into being in September of 1948, and immediately prior to that they were called the Raiders. In the 1930s the NHS sports teams were called the Fighting Phantoms (or simply the Phantoms), and that nickname was preceded by the Pilots. I didn't do research as to the exact time periods of these, but I can say the team names were seldom included in the High School yearbooks from years ago.

McBeanne had a grin on his face. He spoke first at a recent assembly of the Cheap Coffee Club. "Good news for those bees we were talking about. A few months ago we discussed sad news concerning our little friends who have so much to do with successful crop pollination. They were disappearing in bunches. According to information from the Natural Resources Defense Council, in response to a lawsuit they filed, a judge ruled that a pesticide called spirotetramat manufactured by BayerCropScience must be removed from shelves. It can make a large group of bees sicken and die. This terrible effect could cause a negative outcome on a lot of our national food production."
