ANSTED, Mich. The 101st consecutive reunion of the descendants of John and Sarah (Wilcox) Rockwell was held in Ansted, Mich. on Aug. 23. Hosts for the event were Basil Rockwell, David and Mary Ann Rockwell, Tim and Janice Turnwald, and Pat and Joanne Harris. The 40 family members in attendance came from Lebanon, Ky.; Norwalk; Adrian, Ypsilanti, Addison, Clinton, Ansted and Tecumseh, Mich. The next reunion will be in Norwalk on Aug. 22, 2010.

WILLARD - Effective Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day, the Huron County Title branch office in Willard will have new hours to serve the public. The title office will serve the public from the Willard desk from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, closing from 11 a.m. to noon.

No one knows quite what to expect from tonight's Norwalk city council meeting. One thing's for sure, legislation regarding the purchase of property in the Old State Road/Gallup Avenue area will receive its first reading. The property will eventually be used, if the purchase goes through, for soccer fields. The city can use funds about $96,000 from money specifically earmarked for greenspace development.

MONROEVILLE - The Huron County Sheriff's Office and Monroeville Police Department responded to a suicide by gunshot Sunday morning on Webb Settlement Road. Anthony F. Rossi, 18, of 7870 Ohio 18, Bellevue, was found dead laying in the back seat of in a silver 2007 Toyota RAV4 with a .22 caliber handgun on the floorboard, Officer Wallace Johnson wrote in his report. The gun was directly under Rossi's right side.

While the show was taped and edited Monday, technical difficulties have prevented us from posting it on our Web site. AAA projected the number of Americans traveling on vacation this Labor Day weekend will be heavily impacted by when Labor Day falls on the calendar. About 39.1 million travelers are expected to take a trip of 50 miles or more away from home, a decrease of 13.3 percent from 2008. Labor Day fell on Sept. 1 last year allowing for a long weekend trip before a new school year started in many regions of the country.

I don't personally know Scott Krichbaum, but I really kind of like the guy. I met him once when he was running for first-ward council. He actually trailed Lynn Chapin when the votes were counted on election night, but he eventually won once the provisional and absentee votes were figured in. And that's the last time I really heard about him. There's not a whole lot we do over here in the first ward that gets us too excited. That all changed last week when Krichbaum stepped up to the plate for us.

Monday was the end of an 18-year-long era for the Huron County Emergency Management Agency (EMA). Bill Ommert, the director since January 1991, was retiring. His assistant director since July 2006, Jason Roblin takes over today as the acting director while the county goes through the application process.

MILAN - A former Norwalk man must post a $50,000 bond before being released from the Erie County Jail in connection with a Milan burglary. Kyle A. Reed, 23, of Huron, is accused of trespassing in an occupied Berlin Street home and stealing a 32-inch flat screen television valued at more than $500, police said.

BISMARK - Pauline (Wise) Faulhaber checked out the pictures and found herself in the St. Sebastian eighth-grade class of 1949. It brought back some fond memories for the Willard woman. There were many others just like Faulhaber Sunday at the grand opening celebration of the Bismark Senior & Community Center. It also was a celebration of 140 years for the Sisters of St. Francis.

Tragedy 3,000 miles away hit home to a Norwalk family. Arnie Quinones, nephew of Jim McClain, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Norwalk, was one of the firemen killed Sunday night in California wildfires.

As mentioned previously in this space, I love my Global Positioning System (GPS) device. I can enter an address in it, and it will show me a map with the best route, speak to me every time I need to make a turn, indicate how far I am from my destination and make an uncannily accurate estimate of my arrival time.

GREENWICH - The South Central school district honored Shirley Oney with a retirement party Sunday afternoon. Oney has been treasurer of the district the past 35 years. He last day of service was today.

A woman is in the intensive care unit of St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center after she fell off a horse Sunday on Washington Road. The woman's identity, personal information and medical condition were unavailable at press time. North Central EMS Executive Director Don Ballah said the call came in as a pedestrian-horse accident.

COLUMBUS - Students continue to make strong gains in academic achievement, according to the 2008-2009 report cards results released today by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE). "Educators continue to help students achieve at higher levels and, in many cases, surpass the rigorous academic standards that have been laid before them," said Deborah S. Delisle, superintendent of public instruction. "More districts have earned a rating of effective or higher on their 2008-2009 report cards than in previous years."

A new show focusing on high school football has debuted on this Web site. Reflector Roundtable focuses on local teams competing in the Northern Ohio League, Firelands Conference and Sandusky Bay Conference, and also touches on the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns.
