If this person 'didn't know' that heroin was addictive, then, WOW, she must have been living in a box with no access to the media, newspapers, the outside world, ANYTHING for her ENTIRE life. What a sad, pathetic way to grow up. It's an absolute miracle she has been able to assimilate into society. Yup, that was sarcasm. What a pathetic excuse for a person. Anyone foolish enough to believe she 'didn't know' is an enabler, and a sorry excuse themselves. She didn't know. Sure.

Well it's all about making excuses. Addicts are not accountable, they blame others, and there are a million excuses as to "why this didn't happen", etc.. And unfortunately, a lot of times, when they finally do own up to their own behavior, it's only for attention, and once they get that, they're right back to their old ways.

blah blah blah, pretty easy to judge isn't it? Not everything is as it appears, get off your high horse. Katie, (the child in reference) has a great father, which now has custody of her. He works his butt off and has put up with my sister's crap for almost a decade. Call it love, call it foolishness, call it what ever you want, he's supported her and Katie ever since they got together. It's ashamed such a great guy got stuck into a situation like he is in. My sister was told she'd never, ever conceive.. ever.. The child was a result making a DUMB decision to still have sex unprotected, and trusting her diagnosis from years past. Katie is not supported by the state, he has never, and never will collect foodstamps, medical or anything else for Katie. He pays for insurance, works hard and has tried his best to help Rachelle stay clean. However, this will not be easy on Katie, having your mother gone for two years of your childhood, there will be a lot of questions, a lot of quality time missed, and it's not the ideal situation. blah blah blah, perhaps you should withhold your harsh assumptions and judgments before posting ridiculous comments in public.

letmepicyou - yes actually Rachelle's Heroin addiction was the result of getting into drugs via "gateway drugs" and then unfortunately looking for an ever more increasing way to mask/cope with life. She has many times made the comment to me that she was addicted the first time she did heroin, and if she had knew that were possible she would have never tried it. Her decisions are her decisions, they were poor and she could have chosen to handle her life differently, however, "gateway" drugs exist and ARE harmful, and this is coming from the 2nd youngest of 8, of which 4 became addicts. Lastly, as much as I appreciate D.A.R.E. as a program and remember the years going through it, I think we need to move to a more in-your-face curriculum. After watching almost 9 years of addiction with Rachelle alone, and the affects of drugs, I can't recall a single piece of the D.A.R.E. program that really addresses the gruesomeness of drug addiction, to many kids graduate from D.A.R.E. and think it's a just a joke. We need serious Drug prevention programs in Norwalk, and a lot more information put into these kids from a young age.

AWU, weed is not a scapegoat... People like you need to get it into your head that while many people are like you and do it for recreational use, there's a whole other percentage that utilizes it as a coping mechanism... And unfortunately in those situations it usually leads to experimenting with other drugs in an attempt to mask their pain/issues/weaknesses; what ever you want to call it. You can dumb it down all you want, but you can talk to anyone who has been around serious addictions their entire life, or any drug counselor, and they'll likely agree. Now I'm not denying "weakness", of course there is a weakness there, there is a void she's filling heck yes.. No one is saying that weed MADE HER do other drugs, and you assuming that's what I'm getting is pretty assumptive considering how explicit my last message was.

I wonder if those traditional "Gateway Drugs" led her to heroin. Gateway drugs like nicotine, alcohol, and caffeine. Bet you thought I'd say something else.
