@ 6079 w to Edinburgh to see Hume: Thankfully,I couldn't get the link to work.So got visit the library to read this article. Sure reads 'same ol,same ol',don't it? Here's the cool part for me though. He uses:"Shibboleths" never heard of the word, had you ? Of course, the library's main dictionary has some 450,000 words in it,so finding it was a fun adventure in that amazing book

Think about it though, some 450,000 words in our langauge, all available for our use to better our ability to understand one another and, we still flub it up-----constantly ! Is that a hoot or what ? At any rate thanks for the poke in the right direction

I'm beginning to feel as though I'm in the process of beating the proverbial "dead horse," but this opinion piece yesterday concerning the "Halftime in America" commercial was too good not to pass along. Lot's of interesting asides to the whole auto story.

@ Cliff Cannon: IMO, potentially with the right combination of taxes and reduction in onerous regulations, OH could make a financial and economic comeback. However, I sincerely have my doubts that these legislative changes will ever occur in the present political environment.

A 'very' interesting opinion piece in the WSJ yesterday:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405297020388990457720087215911349...

The high tax, low tax graph was enlightening.

Smith: Sadly agree with your G.M. statements. Then add this industrial titan: G.E. their 'G.E. Capital' certainly puts them into the same boat as G.M. Crazy ain't it?

Also, must agree with you on other cities,you/ I care more about. Where would one start? Having had the pleasure from boyhood on, of visiting untold countless cities. It grieves me to no end, how so few cities have a commercially viable downtown left. Understanding the reasons ( malls, sprawls, crime, white flight, etc) does not make it any easier to take in,does it?

@ Cliff Cannon:

For several yrs., GM made more money financing cars through GMAC then they did selling them. GM was in effect, a finance company that built vehicles on the side.

Ally Bank, the old GMAC is still 70% owned by the U.S. taxpayers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ally_Bank

I wouldn't trust any co. that once went bankrupt, for fear that they would do it again.

For those that had liability claims against GM, they were denied after bankruptcy and told - this is a "different" company.

I’m saddened by Detroit as well, but they made most of their own mess and there are other cities close to home that I care about more.

@Smith : Got a quick thought to make you vomit. Then, a quick story of 'actions have consequences'

Regarding the auto bailout's.By far,I believe the worst thing in the whole matter, was the doing away with some 1000 plus dealership's. Case in point our own 'Dorr Chevrolet' which as I understand it,was a victim of the bailout. As many at the time cried, these dealerships were providing jobs, surviving on service and being a part of the community's they had served for how long? So what,if they didn't sale many cars, they were in fact ----profitable. Now,of course,'Dorr Chevorlet' is an empty building.Congrats, again to our stupid gov't.

"To h*ll with Detriot." Being a native Detrioter,I still love 'Motown'. Truly, makes me sick to remember how it was when I was boy, then see it today. Of course, like so many Detrioter's, we know only one "royal family"-----the Ford's. As all the other titan's of the glory day's either died, sold out or in the case of G.M. had their names hidden by the corporate name.

Obviously, the Ford family was/is extremly colorful,as well as civic minded,so one of them always seemed to be in the news. Then if that wasn't enough, they seemed to marry other huge names ( Edsel married into the J.L. Hudson local dept store legend line. His son William married a Firestone, etc) so once again there they were----in the public eye

Being a huge fan, I've visited as many Ford homes, sites, etc as possible ( even recommend a tour of 'Woodlawn' cemetary, where Edsel is, for a who's who tour of Motor City legends) Here's---finally, my point. When,Henry Ford became a huge success,he also became a very cruel man.One of his favorite "hates" was jewish people. Henry's town was Dearborn,Michigan ruled for over 30 years,by one of the best known segregationist's in America:Mayor Orrville Hubbard

So today,64 years after Henry died, what city ---by far--- has the highest concentration of Arab-Americans in America? Yep,Good ol' Dearborn,Michigan. Henry and Orrville, must be spinning in their graves.Proving once again, not only the law of unexpected consequences, then reminding that even the grave can not stop a legacy of hatered.

Oops! The Chrysler “It’s Halftime in America” commercial wasn't even filmed in Detroit.

"The commercial was filmed around New Orleans, Los Angeles and several areas in northern California, including Oakland, San Francisco and Petaluma," - Detroit Free Press

Also: "The company is 58.5% owned by Fiat." So much for an "American" co.

Chrysler commercial? Cheap political pandering.

Sure the federal govt. can continue to pour billions of taxpayer dollars into a fiscal and political mess. Expensive unionized autoworkers, overpaid bad management and incompetent city and state govt. kinda acted like a slow-moving Michigan version of Hurricane Katrina.

Where are the federal tax dollars and the sense of American pride to help rejuvenate Youngstown, Akron, Dayton and other hard hit OH industrial cities?

To h*ll with Detroit.
