What to do with Fitchville rest area?

Members of the North Fairfield Historical Society unveil the marker commemorating the Golden Age Nursing Home fire of Nov. 23, 1963 during a ceremony at the the roadside park in Fitchville.

No one appears sure of what to do with the rest area located on Ohio 13 in Fitchville.

The Ohio Department of Transportation has told the Huron County commissioners it plans to close the facility unless another group wants to maintain it.

Commissioner Gary Bauer said he'd been contacted by a volunteer group that expressed interest in taking care of the rest stop. The other two county commissioners also discussed possible solutions.

Gentleman's name was Eugene H. Woods.

About the only thing that I found out about him was a Toledo Blade article from 1964.

Where are people to pull over if they need to rest or go to the bathroom? If you pull off somewhere you are a suspisous vehicle. Why is it McDonalds duty to have a public bathroom for the world? We know who we have to thank for this. I say we figure a way to keep our existing rest areas open!

I figure that with the thousands of dollars I've pumped into McDonald's Corporation over the years, I can use the rest room at any of them.

@toby's mom: The fire claimed, some 80 lives, it happened 3 or 4 miles north of the rest area near the corner of Rt.250 & Prospect rd. (Today, you'll see a home, quite a few ever green trees and a small pond with an island in it there) between Fitchville and Olena. To the right of 'Babyland' in Woodlawn cematary you'll find about 22 graves of victims with a common tombstone

The fire was extremely important, since it changed everything in safety codes across America for nursing homes. Again as it comes down from legend, folks couldn't get out due to small hall's, small doors and not enough of them, overcrowding, etc The fire was ----believe it or not----despite losing 80 people, back page news in America that day---- November 22,1963---- for the simplest of reason's........ President Kennedy was murdered

@ Cliff Cannon:

I've heard stories of a truck driver and perhaps others stopping and attempting to get residents out only to have them return to the building because they were cold.

@Smith: Good to hear from, been to long since we 'chatted' . Your link as usual, provided much better knowledge than my memory,so thanks. Also,in reading it,I went back to our chat's regarding the 82 year old dementia man. Obviously, what you amongst others, taught me about dementia in that article came dramatically into play here, didn't it?

@ Cliff Cannon: Back at ya! :)

Also, if I recall correctly a man named Gene Woods ran the place. He went on the lam and the authorities eventually caught up with him out of state yrs. later. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on the web.

Dementia? One of my favorite lines is from The Who: "I hope I die before I get old."

If traveling North past the rest area, just a couple more turns to the right & you'll be in Log Cabin territory.
