Kal-el. The greatest? Written by a non-veteran (Tom B.) also. Truth is most WW2 era people are gone or have better pensions than most. You better open your eyes & talk to single mothers, those 50somethings that lost thier jobs after 20+ years, or people under 60 sixty looking for work. As Eric Bourdan stated, "This is a hard world to get a break in."09:22 PM

Way to give back to the "Greatest Generation" folks. They sacrificed everything, lost their parents, spouses, and sons, ate on rations, and shut down their industries for the war effort. And then the next generation fought the Cold War. But you can't afford a buck a month. Shame on you.03:35 PM

Wow, Nice comment Kal-el...This comment probably just lost a few hundred more votes with thinking like this. Shame on you, for trying to make people who are in need themselves even feel worse than they already do.11:03 AM

@ kal-el: Nice attempt at Reductio ad absurdum. The value of houses in Huron Co. continues to slide. Adding taxes onto a depreciating asset is ludicrous.
"The Greatest Generation" already receives a goodly amount of income redistribution from younger generations through federal and state entitlement programs and other discounts.

My wife and I are very close to being seniors, my generation went through the turmoil of Vietnam, massive social changes and technology advances unheard of. Why does that make any other generation "owing us"? The problem is that some, not all seniors have become yet another group of "entitlements". My concern is the debt my children and grandchildren will have to pay off. Maybe if this bond request was modest and not the grand $5.5 million palace I would consider supporting it but in its present form I will VOTE NO...02:40 PM

Although everything SOS has stated is true, if their current building falls apart, they could make the Willard senior center their headquarters. Although they currently lease their space in Norwalk from the County, they own their Willard building outright. And the Willard facility is where all those meals are prepared, so if they had to give up the Norwalk location, meals would go on as usual. The other valuable services they currently provide could also be relocated to the Willard building without being interrupted. If they get their new building, they think it would be perfectly fine to have the rest of the county travel north. If they lose the election and their Norwalk location, maybe the staff should simply travel south.11:34 AM

How is it that govt. got into the business of caring for and feeding seniors anyway? Charities exist for this purpose and should be encouraged.Go check the area nursing homes. Medicaid pays for the vast majority of the residents care. As they age, the 78 million boomers will eventually bankrupt this country with “free” govt. goods and services.
We can keep stealing from future generations only until their money runs out.

This isn't "stealing from future generations." This is a bought and paid for project if the voters approve it. This isn't "big govt" taking care of seniors, it is a LOCAL public/private organization doing so. Ironically, if SES wasn't there to help these people, "big govt" would have to. Would you rather have a local organization that is responsible to their community do it, or the Feds?04:10 PM

A 5.5 million dollar senior center is a luxury. The taxpayers of Huron County will prove this on March 6 .12:28 PM

I'm certainly sensitive to the needs of our Seniors, given that they paved the way for the younger generation, but I think this levy is a tough sell. Wouldn't it be possible for them to have space in the JFS building? I've heard from multiple people that the JFS building is nowhere close to being fully utilized.12:11 PM

You just go ahead and vote yes and take more from the taxpayers! These are luxuries not things we need. What did older folks do years ago for entertainment? We have one of the highest unemployment rates in the state! What about we have no money dont you understand?04:17 PM
Fibber Mcgee says
The levy if passed will cost me around $20 a year, It may be tough for me but I feel that the seniors are well worth that. I do agree that the levy probably will not pass, I will however give them my support.01:43 PM

The senior center provides over 200 meals daily to homebound seniors throughout the county. The senior center provides transportation to doctor's appointments, grocery stores, drug stores and hospitals among other places to the count of nearly 90 a day for seniors whos family cannot take them. They assist hundreds of seniors yearly meet their prescription needs when their healthcare plan hits the dounut hole. Their meal drivers have been the only people to visit for days while a senior lies on the floor (and it has been as long as 2 days) waiting for someone to call a rescue squad. The senior center takes care of parents and grandparents so the younger generation doesn't need to take excessive time off and risk their jobs. Nursing homes cost taxpayers MORE money. This is NOT about luxuries.02:41 PM

@saveourseniors, while I agree the senior center provides a valuable service, the levy has nothing to do with services you bring up. This levy is about procuring money for a multimillion dollar NEW building to house the senior center. Considering the hard times people currently have to endure, I have to say the timing is bad. When a large portion of homeowners are currently having trouble making ends meet, I believe the vast majority would consider a $5 million senior center to be a LUXURY!!! If my choice is to feed and keep a roof over my family, and provide the taj mahal to senior citizens and luxury office space to the bureucrats who run it, I'm going to choose to take care of my own. At the rate everyone is asking for money, you are going to start seeing people taxed right out of their homes. Just FYI the last Senior Services Levy for Huron County was passed in 2008, a 5yr, 0.5 mil levy that covers the services you stated. This levy is an additional levy, ONLY for the construction of a new center. This means next year we will be hit with another levy for senior services. I would watch pushing this too hard are it is likely the voters will vote down funding in 2013 which will really hurt seniors.03:06 PM
save our seniors says
That levy provides a SMALL portion of the funds needed to cover the services. This is not a levy it is a bond issue to cover the land cost, building and furnishings necessary to run as a senior center.03:03 PM
save our seniors says
The services I bring up are exactly what is at risk. If they have no place to move the people who provide the services, how can there be services? The building is specifically not a Taj Mahal. It was carefully designed to provide space for the needs of the seniors not the "bureaucrats."03:11 PM
KnuckleDragger says
I smell a fibber. Quit with doom and gloom. There are many options for relocation of the senior center that do not require a bond issue to the tune of $5.5 million. I guess it doesn't hurt to try, but with the current state of the economy, I don't see it happening.03:22 PM

Go ahead, check the facts!05:40 PM
KnuckleDragger says
I have, and you are spreading alot of misinformation. If this doesn't pass, it will be business as usual for the senior center, only not in an expensive new building on my dime. If you are going to drum up support you shouldn't be spreading lies because it will work against you. I read the bond issue, this is only to pay for a new center. It in no way funds current or additional services to seniors. Services will continue with or without the Taj Mahal. Go ahead, Check your FACTS!10:34 AM

"for the purpose of constructing, equipping, furnishing and otherwise improving a county building to provide facilities for senior citizens services..." (straight from the bond language) With out a building to work out of, and the one they are in IS FALLING DOWN, how can there be services? Have you ever been out there? I don't know who you checked with but it can't be anyone who'd know. I have been in the current center on Shady Lane. I am surprised it passes saftey qualifications. If the building isn't closed this year or next, it will be soon enough. I know that hundreds of seniors in Huron County need the services they provide. I have volunteered to deliver meals to the seniors. I have seen that this is the only hot meal they get. These services may not end immediately but with more and more citizens needing these services every year, the need will surpass the availability of the services.11:50 AM
