Montgomery: Flow control keeps tipping fees high
Jan 26
2012
Norwalk sanitation superintendent Jeff Montgomery wanted to clear up several issues Wednesday regarding trash.
Montgomery had heard the recent discussion among city officials about the privatizing of city trash collection.
A local resident, at a recent council meeting, said the city could save $10 to $20 per ton if a private company hauled city trash.
"That saving $10 or $20 per ton, that's just not true," Montgomery said. "The county has flow control and that's the law. You pay $54 per ton. It doesn't matter who you are."
Montgomery said this morning city residents, who have an average household income of $44,000, pay $9.16 per month for trash collection and other related service, like yard waste and leaf pickup.

This is norwalk not toledo, toledo workers made over $100,000 a year and were union with alot of issues. Toledo residents are now paying $8.95 a month for trash and recycling thru the privatization. An average household income in norwalk is $44,000 a year which means that household pays $9.16 a month for trash services which includes yard waste, leaf and brush pickup with the compost pile. Find a private hauler to do that. Do you ever see piles of trash on the curbs from evictions and foreclosures? You will if you privatize. Private companies do nothing for free. They will not pick up trash laying in the streets or when animals tear open the bags. It is a lose, lose in services when a city privatizes.05:28 PM

Freakmighty writes: "Private companies do nothing for free."And the Sanitation Dept. and municipal employees do?
$200K for a new trash truck plus thousands of additional dollars in future operating and maintenance costs doesn't read "free" to me.
Before the city spends $200K to buy a new truck, privatization should be seriously considered. Unless there's a dollar and cents analysis and a cost comparison, it's just emotional rhetoric.

Have I ever seen piles of trash on the curbs in front of evictions and foreclosures? Why yes! I did on Garden Street during the election last year, and they happened to belong to the mayoral candidate who was a challenger.03:29 PM

Do u people realize that the quarter percent income tax will still be inplace if u privatize it so u will be payin the same and losing services02:56 PM

So is Mr. Montgomery saying that the Norwalk municipal waste system is set in stone and unmovable?Reads like a fallacy.
How is it that other municipalities like Toledo have reported taxpayer savings by moving to private waste haulers?

Remember: The state is reducing revenue sharing. Every single penny saved in taxes for Norwalk's increasing population of fixed-income senior residents will go a long way to helping them maintain a dignified standard of living.

To get votes, the lying politicians have been feeding the sheeple that "free" nonsense forever.

@ Freakmighty: If true, then Norwalk's gonna eventually be in deep sh*t because the local population is gradually becoming older and poorer.Who's gonna pay for the increasing costs of municipal services; the few remaining that have jobs and pay income taxes? With Norwalk's continuing high unemployment rate, a different funding mechanism is gonna eventually be needed regardless.

First off It was never stated it would save $10 to $20 per ton, the statement was why are we paying 10 to 20 dollars more than just about anywhere else in Ohio. That is what was asked!
