A 14-year-old Wakeman boy stabbed his mother's boyfriend in the back, preventing the man from raping his mom, authorities say. The boyfriend was arrested and jailed, charged with attempted rape.

Nathan L. Hindle, 31, of 4674 Wenz Road, Wakeman, is in custody at the Huron County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Huron County Sheriff's Capt. Ted Patrick said authorities received a 9-1-1 call at 3:43 a.m. Jan. 25. Nobody spoke, but a dispatcher heard a woman screaming in the background. Deputies responded to the Wakeman home and made contact with the woman who was screaming. Patrick said police also saw Hindle with what appeared to be three stab wounds to his back.

Patrick said Hindle arrived home in the early morning hours of Jan. 25 and started arguing with the woman, his girlfriend of almost 12 years.

At some point, Hindle allegedly began assaulting her and she screamed for help. Patrick said the victim's 14-year-old son came to her aid and tried to non-violently intervene. When that didn't work, the teenager picked up a 6-inch buck knife and stabbed his mother's boyfriend three times in the back, Patrick said.

Hindle was taken by squad to Fisher-Titus Medical Center, where he was treated and later released.

Police arrested him at a Jacquie Lane residence Norwalk on an attempted rape warrant, which was issued on Jan. 25 through Norwalk Municipal Court. He was taken to the Huron County Jail, where an officer said Hindle's condition was good.

The incident involving the boy has been forwarded to the Huron County Prosecutor's office for review. However, Patrick said it is unlikely that the youngster would be charged.

"He was simply going to the defense of his mother and trying to intervene without any weapon and that didn't work," Patrick said.

If Hindle posts bond, he is prohibited from having direct or indirect association or communication with the victim or anyone under the age of 18.
