Anger bubbles up in Congress over anti-obesity ads targeting soda

Taxpayer-funded anti-obesity ads targeting soda aren't going down well with a congressman who has introduced legislation to prohibit federal spending on any campaigns targeting legal American-made products.
Tennessee Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais's "Protecting Foods and Beverages from Government Attack Act" would prohibit the use of federal dollars for "scare campaigns" against products lawfully marketed under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
He introduced the measure in response to ads, funded with federal economic stimulus funds, that target soda. A New York ad, for example, shows blobs of fat being poured out of a soda can and admonishing, "Don't drink yourself fat."
"When I see stimulus money being used to attack American companies and American workers, I think it would be very unsettling to be working on the assembly line of Coca-Cola, look up and see an ad that's trying to hurt the very job that you make your wages and pay taxes from," DesJarlais said in an interview outside the House chamber.
"These advertisements strike at the heart of personal responsibility," DesJarlais added in a letter to congressional colleagues seeking their support for the measure. Food and beverage companies, he added, "should not have to be concerned that their very own tax dollars are being used against them."
The congressman, who is a physician, added: "Dietary choices should be a personal decision, or they should be made by individuals in consultation with a doctor or dietitian."
But Dr. Jonathan Fielding, Los Angeles County's director of public health, said in an interview, "We need to educate people about what's in the food that they eat." A Los Angeles County website features a bottle of soda pouring packs of sugar into a glass and says, "You wouldn't eat 22 packs of sugar. Why are you drinking them?"
"Tobacco is a legal product, but if we hadn't had government help in sponsoring ads that help people understand the harm from tobacco, where would we be today?" Fielding added. "Obesity is our biggest epidemic, so trying to attack it with both hands tied behind our back would make it very difficult."
A DesJarlais spokesman said that while it is appropriate for government to require companies to post the nutritional value of their products, it's not Washington's job to try to persuade people in what they should or should not eat.
A Seattle anti-obesity campaign shows a mother pouring sugar out of soda bottle into a glass and handing it to her child. "You'd never serve your kid a glass of sugar," it says. "Those extra calories can bring on obesity, diabetes and heart disease."
The American Beverage Association supports the legislation, which has been sent to the House Energy and Commerce Committee for consideration.
The panel's top Democrat, Rep. Henry A. Waxman of Los Angeles, said: "Childhood obesity is a serious health issue, especially when considering that one-third of our nation's children are overweight or obese. ... We should be promoting proven and promising interventions to address the childhood obesity epidemic and not putting arbitrary or ill-conceived limitations on campaigns and other initiatives that will help improve the health of our youth."

Ever notice how many fire dept. runs are to help lift a patient? In a calamity, fat people will just be in the way. Obesity costs all of us so any effort to reduce it is good. JFK saw the problem in 1960 and it's way worse now.03:41 PM

@ rogerthat: So what's your solution?Should the Democratic People's Republic of Obama, declare that all the morbidly obese are domestic terrorists, arrest them and place them in re-education fat camps?

Don't worry, you have a diversified portfolio, it won't hurt if your Coca-Cola stock drops a little.04:36 PM

@roger.. Yeah what is your solution?.. If it's like Smith ask.. Then what?? pull television sets.. Make's kids need glasses..go back to hand washing clothes.. kids sometimes get trapped in modern washers.. No steak knives in homes, All electrical devices must be plugged in by an electrician. Heck, outlaw fly-swatters... Bugs have rights... Cut down all trees, some limbs fall and cause insurance claims and some deaths.. No more driving when there is any snow/rain.. Some drivers become impaired. No driving during sunrise or sunset.. May cause a glare. All children must be covered from head to toe while sun in out.Evil sun. Must stop skin cancer..All potable drinking water must be boiled first.. While all this can go on and on.. Just WHO will be the one dictating all this.?? Is that what you want.. What if it's someone like me, Who feels.... ok i can go down this road.. Gay marriage makes some happy. Well then bigamy makes some happy too. Sex makes some happy, well it makes some happy to "ONLY" take care of there kids, not others. Cut all social programs. Shall i continue???03:46 AM

You have to ask? People are feeding their kids crap. This whole obesity thing is making this country weaker and weaker. You probably think fat kids are cute. Fourth meal? When they reinstate the draft it'll keep them out of the military. And of course, too fat and lazy to resist your predicted dictatorship.09:14 AM

@ rogerthat: Unable to resist the coming dictatorship? There's your answer - it's a conspiracy to make everyone obese!!! LOLMaybe the Extremist-in-Chief will have all the healthy people rounded up and placed in fat camps?

Still never answered the question!. As far as crap i have eaten Capt' crunch and grew up eating spaghetti o's. and happen to be one of thee best shape/muscular guys at the gym or any 5-k, pump and run or triathlon i participate in, with my 80's graduate body, even with a truckers lifestyle..of breakfast buffets and greasy burgers. Am i over weight?.. yes by government spec's. I would need to be at-least 20lbs lighter to just break outta the overweight category, so this epidemic you speak of is a form of control, Nothing, I mean nothing is wrong with anything people eat in this country in moderation.. It's just we are being compared weight wise to the rest of the earth. The one whose diets consist of rice and bugs. So still back to your answer??? Why don't you and your liberal based friends first start with the one's who already chose to be at a government control.. The one's on WELFARE. that is the bulk of obesity. Stop allowing them to purchase twinkies on tax dollars.. Noooo you would never think of starting there that is the democrat voting base, let's just control all the workers of the world.. In the name of "it's for your own good"01:56 PM

So you think all those obese people out there will exercise like you do? You do understand that your fitness, in spite of your diet, is from your activity right? Muscle weighs more than fat so being 20 lbs. over doesn't make you obese. Easier to warn people about bad diet than to get them off the couch. Welfare is a tiny part of the problem and just an easy target of opportunity. There is plenty wrong with a large percentage of the things we consider food and moderation is usually considered un-American. Chronic welfare people, the ones that choose it, are mostly Republican voters, if they vote at all. The rest would be a mix, like any other group. Don't worry, lobbyists from the "food" industry will put a stop to any warnings.08:26 AM

It's ALL just control.. One step at a time till the circle is complete.. Every attack is excepted by a %. (Those who it don't pertain too) With that "control" attempt, patience will prevail. and one day ALL AMERICAN's will wake up and say... "What just happened?" too ignorant to have seen the writing on the walls, and chalking it up to "doesn't concern me" ....."what else can i have for free master obama.......till it does..... But then still, there will always be a % who agrees. Brilliant "for your own good" tactic to pure Dictatorship, one step at a time..All the while using your money.. Absolutely brilliant, the sad part is i believe i will still be alive watching all this unfold..I already don't trust anyone.. Wait till then, when i have a couple cans of tuna, while others are starving????09:09 PM
