A whopping 9,107 people paid to attend the Huron County Fair on Wednesday, significantly up from 7,342.
Last year on Wednesday, the fair's third day, was veterans' and kids' day, meaning people were admitted at no cost before 3 p.m. This year, kids' day fell on Tuesday and veterans' day on Wednesday.
The fair's third day saw 6,955 pay to attend in 2008 and 6,890 in 2007.
"It was a beautiful day (with) lots and lots of people," senior fair office worker Ruth Swander said. She added the fairgrounds were "wall-to-wall" with children and strollers.
The weather was good as well.
"I guess we got our order right this time," Swander joked.
Well ... maybe not completely.
Friday will be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 80s, while there's a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday. Highs on Saturday will be in the upper 80s and the chance of rain is 50 percent.
Following today's small livestock sale at 6 p.m., motocross races will take place in the grandstand.
On Friday, activities will include the best dressed animal contest at 4:30 p.m., the Showman of Showmen contest at 5 p.m., a sheriff's K-9 demonstration at 6, square dances at 6:30 and 7:30 and a rough truck competition at 7:30.
Saturday, the fair's last day, will begin early with a rooster crowing contest at 7 a.m. followed by the board of directors election at 8. The large livestock sale is on tap at 9 a.m. The ever popular demolition derby will take place at 6 p.m. -- the same time a barn dance will take place.
