MONROEVILLE - Prosecutors are reviewing the case of an 18-year-old Monroeville man accused of having sexual contact with a 15-year-old Wakeman girl.
The girl told Monroeville police officers the man put his hand down her pants and attempted to have sex with her Feb. 20 after he picked her up at her home and drove her to his house. The man, who is a senior at Monroeville High School, told police he and the girl were sitting on opposite ends of a couch and started to make out when things became more involved, all of which he believed was consensual.
About four hours before Sgt. Frank Gleason interviewed the suspect, he obtained permission from the girl's parents to set up a "phone recording patch" and had the girl call the man to talk about the incident.
"In the recorded call, (the suspect) admitted to guilt of some type, stating 'This could ruin me' and 'I could go to jail or even prison.' However, he stated, 'We didn't have sex,'" Gleason said in his report.
Norwalk Assistant Law Director T. Douglas Clifford received the police report Monday.
"The matter is still being investigated. ... We're still reviewing it for charges," Clifford said.
The girl reported the incident Thursday to her Spanish teacher because the student said "she can trust her and she has gone to her with other problems," Officer Troy Kimball wrote in his report. The teacher spoke to the student's guidance counselor, who then contacted her parents.
When Kimball asked the girl why she waited to tell anyone, she said she was scared and "couldn't tell her parents, but needed to get it off her mind," Kimball said.
During their separate interviews, the girl said she told the man to stop putting his hand down her pants and requested to be taken home because she knew "things had the potential of going further," while the suspect said he never heard the girl say stop, police said. The girl and the man gave officers conflicting reports of what the girl was wearing; she said she had on jeans while the man said the girl wore sweatpants.
Both subjects told police the man's father came home in the middle of the incident and the suspect told the girl to hide in his closet, which both subjects said she did until the father fell asleep about 20 minutes later. The suspect later drove the girl home.
Chief Mike Ruggles was asked about the credibility of either subject's statements. While he declined to comment on what his gut instinct told him, the chief said officers have been able to "pick up on little things" during the various interviews. Ruggles declined to elaborate.
