No cause for concern at Norwalk schools

By AARON KRAUSE - Reflector Staff Writer | Saturday October 31 2009, 12:47am

The number of students absent in recent days within Norwalk City Schools is a bit high, but not cause for panic, school officials said.

Today, 10.3 percent of Norwalk High School students, or about 100 youngsters, were absent, Principal Brad Cooley said.

Cooley referred to the current absentee rate as “a little bit higher than average (but) not significant.”

" Bailey O,
I also agree with you on that point, that is why I take no anitibiotics, over use has killed more immune systems than it has cured. I let my immune system do it's job. Hand sanitizers more for guests, and I wash my hands using plain old soap and water.
We were always told "we'd have to eat a peck of dirt before died" and I probably did. ooopsies, did I give out too much information again???? "

" I think a bigger problem here is that we, as a society, have become too clean. So many hand-sanitizers, disinfectants, anti-bacterial things around today, that it hasn't given anyone the chance to build up a strong immune system.

A vaccine is essentially the virus (alive or dead), and your immune system builds up against that, so in hopes you'll be strong enough to fight it when the real thing comes around. How about letting kids play in the dirt, without following them around with a bottle of Purell? "

" It just boils down to common sense, good handwashing, rememding the kids to cover their face when they cough. Hand sanitizer for their backpacks, and loads of Kleenex.
Those folks in the high risk group get your shot.
Oh, my goodness, teaching your kids to wash their little paws after using the potty is just basic. Yuck, that is so uncouth.
I have hand sanitizer all over the house, even the kats use it, lol. "

" Unfortunately, there is not much common sense. People would rather send their kids to school, sick, than have to figure out how to watch them themselves, and contaminate all the other kids-regardless of what the illness is. And the schools try to impress the importance of handwashing, but if mom and dad are slobs, then the kids will be slobs, too. My daughter has remarked to me, more than once, how many kids she sees use the bathroom and walk out without washing their hands. How disgusting is that??? All I can tell her is to keep on washing hers, and never touch her face-who knows what kid just took a dump, didn't wash their hands, and then goes touching all the desks and everything else, leaving little deposits behind... "

" Croup is going around too. My son who is 12 just got over it. I thought this was just a virus in infants and toddlers, but I guess I was wrong. My daughter is fighting a cold right now also. NOT "swine flu", just a cold. I was told there was even more kids absent from Norwalk High School today, but still unsure as to how many are actually sick from "swine" flu. For anyone who wants to know...New Beginnings Pediatric has "swine" flu vaccines, but only in the flumist form. Huron County Health Department is having a clinic Friday from 7 a.m to 8 a.m for healthcare workers. Sorry for short notice. "

" I don't think people are still panicing about the swine flu as much, but a LOT of people are sick. I have an URI and couldn't get into the doctor for 3 days because they were so packed. My doctor said that they're going around, along with normal colds, sinus infections and the flu. "

" Very well put everyone... I am so tired of hearing people flip out about the flu. Plus there are a LOT of upper respiratory tract infections going around. My daughter and I are just getting over that lovely little virus :) Wash your hands, wash your hands, and when your done wash them again. Stay home if you're sick, especially if you're running a fever, and stock up on kleenex, and medicine (non-asprin pain relievers especially). Hope we all stay well for the most part this winter! "

" Universal precautions, very aptly named. Hand Sanitizer everywhere. Amen to the common sense. "

" Amen zippy! Wash your hands, disinfect your telephone hand-sets, keyboards, etc... Common sense goes a long way. "
