Norwalk Mayor-elect Rob Duncan has named Mark Schloemer the new safety-service director.

The 26-year-old Schloemer will succeed Linda Hebert, who was not expected to return under the new administration. He will take over the safety-service position after Duncan takes office on Jan. 3.

The director of public service and the director of public safety are combined positions in Norwalk.

Schloemer is a 2004 graduate of Willard High School who earned a political science degree at Ohio Northern University. He currently lives in Columbus but said he plans to move to Norwalk "very soon."

You could say that about any town in the state then.

@ sotrue: Don't political parties tend to hire their own when they win elections?

Politics is about patronage - everyone owes somebody else.

rogerthat

Exactly 6079. Think maybe the Republicans in Columbus might have "suggested" who he hire?

6079 Smith W

@ rogerthat: It's not inconceivable.

Cliff Cannon

@ Smith: You really are from Chicago, aren't you?

Alford Plea

And obviously Lesch lost a lot of trust in the last 8 years, allowing "Mr. Duncan and his cadre of hand-picked fellow inexperienced bureaucrats" to enjoy the spoils system of politics the way Lesch, Hebert, Reeder and countless other Y chomosome deficient city new-hires have in recent past. If she could have found a couple female candidates for Law Director, poor Josh would have probably had to use the restroom at the Fire Station. You did not ridicule your queen for making City Hall look like the NOW headquarters. Obviously you feel threatened by his proven education, while you hide behind your unsubstantiated claim of scoring in the 90th percentile in speed-reading "See Spot Run."

6079 Smith W

@ Alford Plea:

Far from being a supporter of Ms. Lesch; I merely believed her to be the more experienced and therefore the more qualified of the two candidates.

Thanks for reading.

sotrue ......... Are you this kids mommy or what?

cow patty

@ sotrue - you're sounding like one of those stalker ex-girlfriends.

sotrue

Pretty good discussion on here regarding everything until you came along with your unintelligent and immature comments. Let the adults talk now and go back to your play area.

cow patty

sotrue - sounds like I struck a nerve or something. I didn't mean to make the correct assumption, honestly.

sotrue

If you must know what my connection is, I graduated with him from Willard so I know him much better than any of you loons on here do. Sounds like to me a lot of jealousy going on over in Truckerland.

Well it looks like the city has been run into the ground with all of the "Qualified" people in office. I like starting over with young blood. Get rid of all of the old farts in office so we can start over from the begining breaking up the "Good Ole Boy" network. A fresh start in other words.

sotrue

Willard did the same thing basically by voting in two new council members who are very young...getting some new perspectives on things can never hurt.

Seriously_Local

Two political appoints, one with strong ties to a family that donates money to the Republican Party and Duncan. Interesting...

And I wouldn't say the city has been run into the ground. We are doing really well compared to other communities our size, but nice try...

Kottage Kat

Kousin Kabin, Yes we are, folks are flocking to the beautiful Maple City to see our innovative Park system, and having done that are fighting to bring new busisness here. That was kind of a daft statement, please note the empty factories, and uptown storefronts. Give me a hint here, and define "really well". Thank you. Kat

6079 Smith W

@ Kottage Kat: Now, now. You’re not being “negative" are you? Where's that "New day in Norwalk" attitude that you like to proselytize? :)

Kottage Kat

@ Smith, I was being VERY positive, asking questions. You can take that out of context and twist it faster than you twist your knickers. Just having some POSITIVE FUN, picky picky. Just want to be like my hero Smith aka MR. POSITIVE. Right cupcake. Look at that beautiful sunshine it is shining on a new day in Norwalk. Have a wonderful weekend, Kat

Seriously_Local

No layoffs, city roads being repaved, rotting sewer systems being fixed, etc. It might not be sexy, but the infrastructure is being improved.

By the way Kat, will you get one of the jobs Duncan said he will bring to the city from China or Mexico?

Kottage Kat

@ Kabin Kitty, No, I am retired, and loving it.

rogerthat

The police and fire are in pretty good shape, the water and sewer are working, streets are passable and the garbage is picked up. The empty factories and storefronts aren't the responsibility of city government. Everyone wants government to leave business alone except when they think government should be providing them with jobs.

Kottage Kat

Then why is the city paying $50,000 for an economic developer? Thank you Kat

6079 Smith W

@ Kottage Kat: Whew! I'm relieved to read that you're not turning "negative."

Hey! According to the NR, Norwalk just got a new hair salon downtown. Maybe Ellen Heinz is proving her worth. Whatdoyouthink?

Kottage Kat

@ Smith, I am excited. I commented on the article. Nice to see some of those empty store fronts occupied. POSITIVE--ly thrilled. Kat

6079 Smith W

@ Kottage Kat:

True on the empty store front point. Unfortunately, uptown needs more retail for sales tax purposes and fewer service industries.

Captain Gutz

Yo 6079,

Service labor is subject to sales tax. Has been for quite some time.

rogerthat

Exactly.

Kottage Kat

Perhaps someone in Columbus mentioned him to Rob.

cow patty

Wow, very intuitive!

Would you hire a police chief without police experience or a fire chief without fire experience, you would not, but it's ok to hire the police chief and fire chief's supervisor with no experience. I hope he works out. Personal relationships should not be part of the decision making process. Please shut us all up and tell us what specific qualifications he has for this position.
