Edison administration, OAPSE reach two-year pact

Edison Local School District officials and Local 350 of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE) have reached a two-year agreement that calls for no increase in the employees' base salary.

However, the employees received two salary steps for the next two years. One of those steps is to make up for a salary freeze. Step increases were frozen for Fiscal Year 13 and Fiscal Year 14.

The employees also picked up an additional percent on their health insurance, going from 10 percent to 11 percent.

District treasurer Anne Arnold said the two sides negotiated about five times, and sessions lasted various hours each time.

"They went very well," said Arnold, who was on the administrative's negotiating team, which also included superintendent Tom Roth, middle school board member Cory Smith and two school board members. OAPSE at any given session had about six people at the table, Arnold said.

"Negotiations is about give and take," the treasurer said. "I would say it was very amicable and professional."

"Everybody worked hard to come up with a fair agreement (for) both sides," Roth said.

"We're glad that it's over with and it's settled," said Cindy Thayer, elementary school librarian and co-president of the local OAPSE chapter. "(The administration) worked with us. It's always a compromise."

The nearly 75 workers hold jobs such as bus drivers, aides, cafeteria staff and custodians. They'd been working without a contract since June 30, although the recently agreed-upon contract will be retroactive to July 1.

In other business at this past week's school board meeting, the board:

Voted to implement bowling as a club competitive sport. If it demonstrates sustainability in three years, it could possibly be added to the district's athletic program.

Held a work session with Hudson-based Impact Group, a company which is helping the district come up with a strategic plan involving everything from curriculum to facilities. Arnold said the district is paying the company $19,750 out of the general fund.

Impact Group has met with groups such as administrators, parents and community organizations. Arnold said district officials hope the process will be complete in the next couple of months.

Why are they paying an outside group $19,750 for curriculum to facilities, to come up with the famous "strategic plan" what does the administration do all day. I forget we passed a levy, let the good times roll on the taxpayer dime.
