Call Mercury Summer Stock’s production of “The Wedding Singer,” the finale of its 2014 season, a triumph with lesser material.

The average at-best musical, based on the average at best 1998 movie, both set in the 80’s, is on stage at Mercury through Saturday. Many might remember Adam Sandler in the title role. The musical’s faithful to the movie without being a replica.

The thin plot is unoriginal and formulaic. A love triangle develops when wedding soloist Robbie Hart’s fiancé, Linda, is a no-show at the wedding, having decided she liked him better when he was younger.
