There will be tears, back slaps, handshakes and plenty of praise for the 1974 championship Norwalk High School football team, which compiled an 11-1 record en route to the state title.

Those are the predictions of Bob Mitchell, president of the Norwalk Public Schools Alumni Association, for Sunday's eighth annual Alumni Recognition.

The celebration will take place in the Norwalk High School gymnasium and is open to any Truckers alumni or anyone who's had a connection with the district.

"It's a wonderful time," said Barb Widman, Norwalk City Schools Interim Superintendent Will Folger's secretary. "The alumni association has done a tremendous job to make this happen."

This year's event will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1974 championship Trucker football team, whose sole loss came against Shelby. It will also include a performance by the Norwalk High School Blue Pride Marching Band.

"Having the (1974 Trucker) football team back will be a great thing," Widman said.

Mitchell, who's been president of the Norwalk Public Schools Alumni Association for eight years, said generally 350 to 400 people attend the event. Widman said the crowd increases each year.

"It's jubilant, it's fun," said Mitchell, a 1957 Norwalk High School graduate.

Mitchell said he thinks the tears that flow will be tears of remembrance; some people who attend haven't seen their classmates in decades. Other attendees have attended every year, Mitchell said.

He said there's been "quite a bit" of information on social media about Sunday's event.

"We believe we'll have a good turnout," said the retired middle school principal from the district now called Edison Local Schools.

Mitchell said he's trying to form an alumni band in time to play for the 2015 all-class reunion.

Those interested will be able to sign up during the event, or they can send an email to norwalkalumni@gmail.com.

Mitchell said he's also try to expand the alumni association's pool of volunteers. Those interested can also sign up at the reunion, send an email to the aforementioned address or call Mitchell at (440) 960-0324. Mitchell said people wishing to be band members can also call him.
