A rural Norwalk couple pleaded innocent Tuesday to stealing between $50,000 and $60,000 from an elderly couple to support their heroin habit.

James E. Miller, 41, and his girlfriend Roberta D. Bisel, 31, both of 4303 Ohio 6O1, each were arraigned in Huron County Common Pleas Court on theft from the elderly. Miller's trial is scheduled for June 24 and his co-defendant goes to court exactly one week later.

Huron County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Dane Howard has said the defendants are accused of stealing from the couple, to whom Miller is related, starting about November and using $40,000 to buy heroin from local dealers in a five-month period. The husband is in his early 70s and his wife is in her mid-60s.

One of the couple's relatives reported the suspected thefts and brought the victims to the sheriff's office for an interview April 8. Deputies interviewed Miller and Bisel the next day.

Capt. Ted Patrick said the victims had financial statements and other documents, which revealed "large balances" were being charged to four different credit and debit cards.

"They maxed out these credit cards," Patrick said about Miller and Bisel. "Then a personal loan was taken out in excess of $12,500."

Miller and Bisel have been unable post a $30,000 bond at the Huron County Jail since being arrested April 9 at the sheriff's office. If convicted, the suspects each face two to eight years in prison and a $15,000 maximum fine.

Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway has ordered both defendants to undergo random drug testing.

I hope their withdrawals from heroin are nasty. They deserve to be beaten. Stealing from elderly family members, scum of the earth!

swiss family

i hope that these two never feel the sweet feeling of freedom , ever again..
to steal from anywhere is so wrong, but to steal from your own relatives is inexcusable!! especially from your elderly relatives!!! and to take such an excessive amount , in such a short time.. is just showing such a total disregard of respect and love.. they don't deserve to live...
then to spend the money on heroin!!! that is outrageous!!! to think that this elderly couple saved all of their lives just to have some scummy relative steal their life's savings from them to buy heroin !!!!unbelievable

i really don't understand why anyone would even try heroin?? have you ever heard any great success stories about anyone who takes it???i haven't.. it seems to always be the heroin addict who steals, or kills or OD's or some other tragic ending!!!

please let justice prevail... put these two scum, away for a good long time!!!

These people will more than likely NOT be sent to prison for an 8 year sentence. I don't see any mandatory minimum sentence for this particular case even with direct elderly victims.
Swiss Family you didn't put these heroin addicts in your categories of Oswald, Manson, Dahmer and the others. Oh that's right you said that Oswald and Manson didn't kill anyone.

I think the judge needs to set an example with these people and sentence them to the maximum. If he doesn't, it just shows other addicts that they can keep getting away with the crimes they commit against others,so they can keep their addiction going. This county and with its heroin problems needs a strong judge who won't tolerate these crimes. If he can't do it then come election time, we'll vote someone in who can! This has become such a big problem in this county, it's about time we got some strong leadership.

They were idiots for ever trying heroin in the first place. I have no sympathy for heroin addicts, they made the choice. On the other hand we really can't afford to lock them all up.

Yeah, and the prisons are already overcrowded as it is. How about if we send them all over to Afghanistan and have them work the Poppy fields. I mean, if you're gonna destroy yourself with heroin, do it good and this way it won't cost them a thing and no crimes against others to support their habit.

babyboomer-LOL! I thought you wrote Poopy fields and thought I was back in the Casa story!

babyboomer

Deer Dave- LOL! Is that a sign we've been on the CASA post too long?! I figured I'd dog the heroin subject for awhile.
