Earns Fulbright grant

When 2010 Norwalk High School graduate Haley Beckett returns from China, she may be able to offer people struggling financially to start a business pointers on other potential financial routes.

Also as a result of a program in which she's participating, Beckett hopes to "promote a deeper mutual understanding between the United States and China."

Beckett has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant to China in Economics. She is one of 1,800 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2014-2015 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Fulbright grant recipients are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential.

Beckett said the program allowed her to come up with a research project and provide details about her proposed researched and its feasibility. Her project concerns "Chinese entrepreneurs and access to financial capital."

"I hope to collect qualitative data about how entrepreneurs or private start-ups funded their business enterprises," Beckett said via email from China. "Starting a business is tough anywhere in the world, and China has a unique political and social climate that has distinct effects on private entrepreneurs.

"It's notoriously difficult to get a loan to start a business in China, so my research explores alternative methods of financing those enterprises and hopes to fit them into existing economic understandings of entrepreneurship and microeconomic behavior."

Sorry, she doesn't qualify for the calendar. She is going to China, not CBCF.

I’m not sure where to begin with your comment. Well, actually, yes I am: You lack basic reading comprehension skill. This student is conducting economic research, not “helping Chinese business” or whatever nonsense you’ve inferred.

The Fulbright is a huge honor and the community should be proud. It's not like NHS produces high achievers en masse. Of course, this is the Norwalk bubble, where getting season tickets to OSU football is considered a crowning lifetime achievement.

After re- reading you are correct, but your arrogance is not becoming. You make it seem that everyone in this town is ignorant. I can admit my mistake can you?

earlduck

well I think its refreshing to see a young person who is making something of her life instead of the usual losers we see here.
also theres usually a lot of athletes'and I wouldn't want to discredit that, but some of us know what an accomplishment the Fulbright is and that they are in every country in the world
