A former University Hospitals physician, who was recently indicted on charges of improper sexual conduct with several patients, is dead.

Dr. Waheed A. Malik, 52, of Conneaut, committed suicide, July 10, in Maryland. Cause of death was a shotgun wound to the head, according to the Maryland Medical Examiner’s Office.

Malik was indicted, by an Ashtabula County Grand Jury, June 25 on two counts of sexual battery and four counts of sexual imposition. He was set for arraignment in Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court on Aug. 7, according to court records.

The Montgomery County Maryland Police Department confirmed Malik’s death, but did not provide additional information. A public information officer said the department conducted a death investigation and foul play was not suspected.

Malik’s attorney, Harvey Bruner, of Cleveland, did not wish to comment on the matter.

“I cannot comment, nor will I,” he said.

Malik was arrested April 28 after allegations surfaced of improper sexual conduct with one of his patients.

The patient made a formal complaint to the Medical Board of the State of Ohio. Several other female patients came forward with similar allegations, following the arrest, according to court records.

Malik was out on a personal recognizance bond since his initial appearance in Ashtabula Municipal Court in April. He had since been terminated from his position with University Hospitals and his license was revoked by the state medical board.

Prior to his arrest, Malik was serving as a primary care physician at UH’s Ashtabula Primary Care office on Lake Avenue. Malik was once listed as one of America’s Top Physicians.
